Seemless – What Have We Become Review

Seemless’ second release, What Have We Become, is a true-to-form blue collar rock n’ f’n roll album chock full of heart and monstrous sounds. The “power of five” lives in this quartet: with Jesse Leach, Pete Cortese, Jeff Fultz and Derek Kerswill, there is a rich history of Massachusetts metal in these ranks. Featuring a combined resume that includes credits from Killswitch Engage, Overcast, Shadows Fall, Burn Your Wishes and Icepick, it’s apparent that Seemless are headed in a distinct musical direction.

This is old bluesy hard rock with a metal edge, a crushing rhythm section, striking riffs and undeniable energy that seeps from the pores. What Have We Become is the kind of album that makes you want to go get into a bar fight in a dirty roadhouse. Leech’s singing soulfully teeters between grit and technical proficiency while keeping listeners attached with lyrically dark and depressing messages of struggle and hope. Recorded live with no artificial mastering or studio tricks, you can feel the natural dirtiness of this real performance band. Taking an oath of being about “the rock, the whole rock and nothing but the rock,” Seemless deliver the goods. Though not a “concept album,” this is certainly not a mere collection of tracks. For Seemless to be fully appreciated, one needs to commence “rocking out” to their killer vibe from front to back.

The more times you listen to this album, the more you will discover. Seemless encapsulates the essence of bands such as: Soundgarden, Life of Agony, Black Sabbath, Monster Magnet, the Mighty Nimbus, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Danzig and Queens of the Stone Age, there is a little something for almost anyone to latch onto.
