I love surprises. Give me a song that knocks me over when I wasn’t expecting to fall in love over my favorite band’s new album any and every day. One of the coolest parts of being into music or other art forms is that feeling you get when you identify with the author/painter/musician despite your expectations to the contrary. Academics call it the shock of recognition and it’s one of my top three things that can happen while listening to music.
I can’t say that indie rock is chock full of opportunities for the shock of recognition. I listen to a lot of indie rock, so it’s kind of hard for it to sneak up on me. But every once in a while a song or artist puts me back on my heels and forces me to listen again (and again and again and…). I can only hope these songs (or at least two of them) have the same effect on you.
