Bon Iver [Official Site, Myspace] is the stage name of singer/songwriter Justin Vernon. Headquartered in the Badger State, the nuevo-soul crooner pens cozy fireside tunes in line with his moniker’s French translation – “Good Winter.” His debut effort, For Emma, Forever Ago, was independently released in early-2007, and garnered far-reaching critical acclaim. Capitalizing on this underground popularity, indie stalwart Jagjaguwar will reissue the LP on May 12.
Recorded in a northern Wisconsin hunting cabin over a three-month period, the music is both silent and unpretentious. Each of the acoustically driven tracks boasts emotional outpouring through a vocal style reminiscent of Arthur Lee (from Love). Indeed, “RE: Stacks” introduces us to the vulnerabilities of loneliness, while “Skinny Love” delves into notions of fleeting romance. However, the in-your-face instrumental “Team” and the driving guitar and horn attacks of “For Emma” are the most memorable inclusions here.
In short, Emma is a somber mood record with a specific time and place. And definitely not an easy listen. However, this shouldn’t be construed as a knock on quality. To truly understand the intended message requires multiple spins, with vivid imagery becoming clearer each time. In time, Vernon’s melodies will ring in your head; no doubt a warm sonic companion for those cold lonely nights. So grab a cup of tea and a blanket, and snuggle up to the hi-fi.
