This is the first podcast by Radio Exile’s own James Mitchell. Always Willing To Listen is a trip into the everyday existence of one of the web’s most talented music journalists, demonstrating that his strength behind the microphone can be just as powerful as the words that flow so eloquently from his fingertips.
How does James feel about fan mail? What does he think about Pete Doherty from Babyshambles and The Libertines? Tune in for answers to those questions and more in this week’s Always Willing To Listen.
Episode 1: [Listen Here]
Featuring the following tracks:
Radiohead - “Bangers n’ Mash”
Nada Surf - “Beautiful Beat”
Nada Surf - “Blizzard of ‘77″
Nada Surf - “Whose Authority”
Nada Surf - “There Is A Light That Will Never Go Out (Live, KEXP)”
For over ten years, Nada Surf has been polishing its approach to pop music through an almost scientific reduction of its garage rock core. In five albums, Matthew Caws and company have continually outdone themselves by flying under the radar of contemporary rock music, even after making it big in the early 90’s with their hit single, “Popular”. On their latest, Lucky, Nada Surf makes a cushion out of more throbbing melodies and weaving crescendo, once again building on the critically successful formulas of Let Go and The Weight is a Gift.
In a rare show of love, I decided to make them the featured artist in my new weekly podcast title (perhaps ironically), “Always Willing to Listen.” The show will feature new and old acts with music you may or may not have heard, and will offer all of our readers-cum-listeners out there a chance to critique me in yet another soon-to-fail creative endeavour. Optimism!
That said, hope you enjoy it!

I like how you talk about yourself in the third person in the first few bits, but then first-person it when talking about something other than yourself. It’s like you’re the Rock.
Liked the show, though I call credit on Nada Surf because I used their video for “Whose Authority” on New Sound Now a few episodes back. And you’ll love them live. I saw them open for Death Cab once, and your description is spot on.
Keep it up, and get a podcast feed so peeps can subscribe!
We have Greg from Newton, Mass. on the line. Greg?
Yes, James, I love your show. I can honestly say I’ve been listening from the beginning. I regularly contribute to the Contrast Podcast that everyone seems to be raving about. Highly recommended. I also hope to pick up with the Triple Play featured on the old Broken Dial now that the new site is up and running with podcastablity.
“Hi, this is Shawn in Queens. Longtime listener, first time caller.
James, I love the show. You should really focus on one artist a week, talk a bit about your favorite pieces and news from around JVM’s neck of the woods.
It’s going to be a hit!”
