Mason Proper To Release Olly Oxen Free

As we get into the tail end of Summer this year and take a peek around the web at Elbo.ws and Hype Machine, you’ll see that tons of good tunes abound. Frankly, we’ve got some really great albums to look forward to this Autumn (or Fall, if you prefer) and one such album is the release of the sophomore record from Michigan’s own Mason Proper [Official Site, Myspace] on 9/23, Olly Oxen Free.

Just last week, I was trying to figure out if I had ever seen those words written down and now I know why. I was talking to someone at All Points West on Friday and they mentioned this album. Made me feel funny to not know how to spell the word “olly”. Maybe it was “ollie” or “ali,” as in “Muhammad Ali”? I didn’t want to guess and be wrong, thus ruining what little cred I have. Now I know. Thanks Mason Proper.

Come check out a new song from Olly Oxen Free “after the jump”

“Lock and Key” [mp3]

“In 2008, Michigan’s Mason Proper (named for an obscure phrase relating to Freemasonry) met with producer Chris Coady (TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blonde Redhead). They rented a small, empty house for a month and recorded the album. Jonathan Visger (lead singer) met up with Chris again at Carriage House Studios to mix what would become Olly Oxen Free (on the same console the Pixies‘ “Doolittle” was mixed on). “This album is born of the same internal madness as the first, only now the layers have been lifted. The core of our band is exposed, to be loved, hated, or ignored.” – says Visger.”
