With last month’s release of Chinese Democracy, it feels as if everyone is looking to cash in on their long-awaited 15 minutes of fame. Some people waited a long time for them to show some interest. Dr Pepper. Um, Axl. Lastly, there’s music photographer Robert John, who began shooting the band back in the 1980s when there were still named Hollywood Rose and became their exclusive photographer when GNR was signed to Geffen Records, travelling with them through the height of their career.
In a special feature at video site Joost [link], John shares footage he shot while on the road with Guns N’ Roses from the end of Appetite For Destruction throughout the Use Your Illusion tours, to give the world a glimpse of what being friends and hanging out with one of the biggest bands in the world was really like.
Come check out my favorite clip “after the jump”
In the clip above, a Guns N’ Roses show was cancelled in Norway (bet you know why I picked it now, eh?) while Axl was in Paris, so during the van ride to the airport, Matt shows Duff, Slash and Dizzy the souvenirs he bought. They started playing with Matt’s toys and joking around about their security guy, John Zucker (who coincidentally looks like Matt’s Viking doll, and is featured at the end of this clip).
