Video Hook-Up: Sin Fang Bous – “Clangour and Flutes”

Sin Fang Bous [Myspace] has really snuck up on me over this weekend and they shouldn’t have. I am just glad that Sindri Mar Sigfusson of Seabear crafted such a charming record, one that is more focused on the pop than anything else as Sigfusson weaves some inexplicably simple melodies into something significantly more substantial. This album is going to have some serious replay value – I can’t stop listening to the this track. Either way, check out the video for “Clangor and Flutes” from the upcoming album of a similar name, Clangour, out on Morr Music 2/17.

Via Pitchfork.tv: Hushed, lo-fi folk-pop is something of a blank slate. If you’re Elliott Smith, you choose to fill it in with multi-layered harmonies, saccharine string sections, and reverb, lots of reverb. If you’re Iron & Wine, you draw on dub, blues, and West African music while incorporating Americana trappings like steel guitar. And if you’re Sindri Mar Sigfussonof Icelandic band Seabear, making your debut under the nom de guerre Sin Fang Bous, you create a video focusing on, if not a blank slate, then at least a clean sheet of notebook paper.

“Clangour and Flutes”, from the recently released Clangour, starts in whispery indie-folk mode, just as a sketch of a human face starts to come together in the video– directed by Sindri himself. The lyrics focus on simple, universal metaphors: He’ll be the lumberjack, you’ll be the tree; he’ll be the boat, you’ll be the sea … fire, house, etc. The ornate construction of the ensuing backing vocals, pianos, horns, and woodwinds could suggest a classical background. Sindri has recorded solo before, in the earliest Seabear material, and this is a decent light, low-key folktronica song with an arrangement that ultimately fills in those opening blanks with a human face: Sindri’s own. He looks sleepy. But who needs an alarm when you have recorders sprouting out of your ears?
