‘Sup, Internet? – RE: Punching artists.

Over in our latest collaboration, the writers of Radio Exile are getting pummeled (pun intended) in the comments section for selecting indie darling Amanda Palmer for a quick punch to the face. To summarize the hating: covering Radiohead so poorly on ukulele, eye shadow, and looking absolutely mannish. (The last one there is mine.)

Seriously. Take a minute. Immerse yourself in her hidden sack:

amandapalmer1

She looks like Jay Leno in drag.

Now calm your twitching fingers, and lean back from your Cheeto-dusted keyboard and Harry Potter embroidered mouse pads… Notice how only one of those critiques has anything at all to do with music?

Assuming you got this far into my post, I’m commenting on the two dimensional Amanda Palmer, indie celebrity. Beside the fact that the cover of Radiohead is kitschy, and doing it on a ukulele makes it an even more transparent attempt at getting people on board with a Radiohead cover because “it’s different”, I… we… haven’t said one thing about her music. Really, on this page, I say nothing of her substance. I just make a few mean comments from my Internet Pedestal, untouchable by anyone or anything. Here, for our commenting audience, let me translate to YouTubish:

The position from which we all lob our criticisms on the Internet is much like World of Warcraft sex. Even though you schedule it once a week with your Paladin spouse, and you’ve Bedazzled your Fleshlight with medevil studs and stones for that very occasion, it simply isn’t real. There is no tangible result, other than frustrated, angst-ridden loneliness.

But I digress.

Just like you all are allowed to tell us to “get AIDS and die” (favorite quote ever, even if it is overused on YouTube), I’m allowed to tell you Amy Winehouse is an ugly tart whose monstrous talent is ironically negated by her ultimate squandering of it. Elie is allowed to rip on Fergie’s busted face, and how she pushed the Black Eyed Peas to sell-out territory. (Remember when their songs were written by Will.i.am, the folk singer, not Will.i.am the Pepsi-whoring propagandist?) Shit, Dan did Sting a favor by simply glossing over the tantric sex thing. There are a thousand jokes there. Dan actually wrote about the music, and how it’s gone from classic performances with The Police, to a watered down minstrel set from your local Renaissance Fair. Come to think of it, no one got hung up on that. So, see? We agree on something! Everyone hates Sting! Pass the meade!

My point?

I like Amanda Palmer. I even like Bono. I’m the guy that started writing a piece about Pearl Jam, pariah of music fandom, and why they mattered (and didn’t finish it) [Why Pearl Jam Matters - Part I, Part II] . I even like Coldplay. As a music critic, I’m obligated to point out the highs and lows of artists on scene. Sometimes, that can come in the form of an over the top suggestion that they are the next best thing; Other times, it can a brutal statement that they should have died along with their pathetic career. Remember: “music business“, not “music friends”. I can hug them, or I can kick them when they’re down. It’s wonderful.

But I’m still a music fan. I can like any artist, any album, any single I want. I tend to like a lot of stuff critics call trash. Even this site. Seriously: I own music by everyone on this list, and I enjoy it. Everyone. Even Girl Talk. (beep beep tweet <Nirvana Riff> beep beep)

I didn’t come here to write for a music blog that tugged off every artist who came up on the indie scenester radar. We’re allowed to have fun. Just like you’re allowed to comment and Digg the hell out of this article. Thanks for the hits, Amanda Palmer Fan Club. Enjoy your man-faced substitute for personal meaning and self-direction!

We love you. <3

  1. “i’m now going to do a cover song.. it’s by this british band.. i don’t know if you’ve heard of them..” (insert numbing wind gust) “they’re pretty great, like me.. they’re um, this little band called radiohead..” (queue up ukelele, some back up vocals from the new england aquarium… and subsequent punch)

    well said, james. well said.

  2. another priceless amander palmer moment: “tiny dancer is my favoritest…but then…umm…there was this other guy i played with -and he was pretty decent. actually I didn’t play with him–it was really his ghost – and umm it was during a seance (umm.those are fun)…but his name was jimi hendrix..and did you know he was black?”

  3. New England Aquarium, nice pull there Holly. Hope you didn’t strain your journalistic muscles Googling “Boston area aquarium”.

  4. Fair enough, but I have to say, it’s kinda weird(…ly misogynist?) that part of what makes the female artists punchworthy are their looks. And re your Amanda dis: “She’s a *man*, baby” was an old insult way before Austin Powers 3 was even greenlit.

  5. Touche, Maura. It is a bit misogynistic, hence the punch recipient that people weren’t going to like, Amanda Palmer, was picked and written by a woman. I didn’t want it to seem as if we’re bashing her for her looks alone and while James and I will agree that her work with Dresden is fun, she irks us for a lot of other reasons. Case in point: we have her CD, we were going to review it, she bugged the shit out of me and instead of bashing her CD in a review that would get no “love”, we decided to mention a point or two in a bigger piece.

Finally, “Coin Operated Boy” might be one of my favorite songs.

  6. Definitely misogynist. But that’s what I was going for… so… uh… Cool!

  8. I can’t stand Amanda. I’ve met her multiple times, and she seems quite the elitist snob. Fun person, but very condescending. I like her Dresden Dolls work because it captured an aesthetic that was unique when it was conceived. Also Brian is excellent on drums live (I nearly shit myself when they did war pigs live, it was epic). But nonetheless, the more critical acclaim Amanda has received, the bigger her ego has become. I don’t really like her solo album. Nevermind that she worked with Avril Lavigne at one point.

Plus she’s a man. (But that’s okay, right?)

  9. Take a chill pill first and proofread your response before posting it. You need a ‘to’ in the first sentence of that final paragraph, for example. It almost seems you were ranting in a desperate attempt to defend yourself.

Also, you might want to check your demographics. Amanda Palmer fans are *shock* not the closeted geeks you seem to suggest, despite your claim to be one yourself. Take a look at The Shadowbox sometime, if you think you can handle it.

Calling yourself a fan and calling her a man? I sense a contradiction. I speak for myself, but I generally *like* and *respect* the things for which I am a fan.

    Two final points:

    1) She doesn’t cover Radiohead. She covers just about anyone, so if you’re going to criticise her for her covers, look at the broader picture.

    2) Holly…jealous much?

  11. I find it hilarious (again) that the good people of Radioexile were so affected by the comments left on their piece that they needed to respond with another blog article and a post on the Shadowbox (not even written by the original author, which is WEAK), telling us not to take them seriously, because they’re on the Internet and they can say mean things if they want to (no, really? I had no idea). And Miss Holly Perry needed to add the first comment clarifying how she was right about her “satire”, because it wasn’t well written in the first place, and looks to me, from that comment, comes more out of cattiness than a real attempt at humor.

Goes both ways, people. Yes, we are just as allowed to be annoyed and lob insults your way as you are to us. Except we don’t devote entire articles to it. However, in between eating bags of Cheetos and playing whatever game you’re referring to (you seem to have more of an intimate knowledge of it than I do), we do find the time to comment.

Obviously you do not affect our love for Amanda, and we do appreciate the publicity for her. But if you folk want to write a flaming blog post, don’t get all embarrassed and defensive because people actually flamed you back. Because that makes you all look a little needy and pathetic, especially when you have to fall back on the old “BUT SHE’S A MAN”.

Your writing will stand on its own, if it’s good enough (which, unfortunately, it wasn’t).

P.S. I hope this comment upsets you enough that you post a part three. In which case, can we slam some WKAP videos? I’d like some more people to see them. Danke. And I agree with others that you guys really should clean up the grammar a bit, if you want this to be a REAL blog.

  12. Actually, I was being civil. Since it was me, Shawn, who conceived, edited and posted the piece, frankly, I was being nice to those weak-minded enough to not see an obvious attempt at satire. Guess what, it did work or you wouldn’t have seen it. We may not have been on your radar, but retards aren’t my target demo.

Second, I don’t need to justify much of anything to you, if you really hated something, you need to boycott it. Instead, you’re still…giving…me hits.

You keep driving people to this “mean, evil” blog and you’re putting money in my pockets. Stop being sheep or find a way to laugh. Your favorite artist was on the list (which upset you) so James wrote the second piece because it was like an effing Twilight party in here all of a sudden.

Contribute something more to the conversation. Let me put this out there: if this really mattered to Amanda, she could contact me: 1) I am really easy to find and 2) If you think we suck, great. There are lots of poorly written, terrible sites that get lots of hits and if both are suddenly true of us, thank you for making it a reality.

  15. “If you cannot sense the irony in this [song], you’re about two intelligence points above a kumquat.”

    her words.

“you might not even like this [song]. it doesn’t matter. our COLLECTIVE freedom to approach situations with humour, with irony, with anger, with sadness, with darkness, with an edge, from a different perspective, from within the situation…it’s ESSENTIAL. the minute you discount humour, you give evil things POWER. you fuel them. you let them rule you.”

    her words. again.

LISTEN to amanda and stop discounting humor!

(also, “eyeshadow” having such an impact brings about Yolanda Saldivar concerns. eek).

  16. Ay, my comment on here was taken much harsher than I meant it to be. Possibly should have left out the PS, it was crueler than necessary and I am not a cruel person. I just got caught up in the spirit of writing mean things (which apparently happens… who knew?). I actually don’t hate the blog, that would involve a lot of investment of emotion into something, as James pointed out, is on the Internet.

But my main point is: the writing was bad. Sorry, it was. I didn’t take offense at the first post, but I did find it funny that you felt the need to defend it so strongly. Using eyeshadow as a point had more of a “what are you trying to say, that makes absolutely no sense” moment, than “oh, that’s HILARIOUS” or “I want to punch YOU in the face for mocking the MAKEUP of my favoritest singer ever”.

Anyway, in the interest of being civil, I end it here. Have a good day, and any creative spirit is a good creative spirit, so for you for writing something and putting it out there.

And yes, using Amanda’s blog to defend your slamming of her is… sweet irony and fucking hilarious. I bow to (all of) you guys on that one.
