Auld Lang Syne Avoid “Midnight Folly”

picture-11

That pun aside, I have a good feeling about much of what is coming out of the Rochester-based label Viper Bite Records. They seem like really great people and one of their latest releases, Midnight Folly by Auld Lang Syne [MySpace], offered more promise than initially anticipated, with “Where My Fortune Lies,” they’ve released one of my favorite singles since I first heard Murder by Death’s Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them? Early into their career, the one-fifth Canadian band dropped a strong effort recently, one that not only caught my ear, but the heart of me as well; any time a CD shows up in a package for me that also includes a 7″ single, I know I am in for a treat. That’s a company or label who gets exactly what I want, which is rare.

While what followed throughout the rest of Midnight Folly won’t be quite as memorable as the experience of my first listen of “Where My Fortune Lies”, this band and this label didn’t lose me as a fan. In fact, I feel like I should be offering more of an apology to them for this review taking as long as it did. Hey, when interpersonal issues get in the way, they get in the way but it isn’t an indictment of the band. Auld Lang Syne are good. This wasn’t a Pearl Jam greatest hits, which I couldn’t review because honestly after 5-6 years of this, you know when you have nothing to add to the conversation.

Auld Lang Syne seem like the kind of act that would relish the opening role, proving good enough to go on tour with the Avett Brothers through most of this past month of June. The gang here at RE will continue to give them a listen (as we keep giving listens to Cory Chisel and Matt Mays and the multitude of other truly promising American or alt-country that we’ve listened to in the last few months). For the small negative response you might find elsewhere, I offer that not every band is meant to have a fully realized sound like Wilco or The National within their first two albums, and having to live up to Whiskeytown’s was hard enough for Whiskeytown.
