Hype Device X: Holy Crap It’s Hot Out Edition!

remixtapeimage-300x109jpg

Has it really been almost a month since I did one of those? My, how time flies! Lets get on it!

And best yet, this is number TEN! Hype Device TEN! American History X? Nah, Hype Device X. In honor of HD:X, here are TEN songs that deserve some blogger love, some buzz spice, and and whole lotta hype!

Ten awesome new artists and mp3s after the jump!

[mp3] Ha Ha Tonka – “Caney Mountain”

The first time I ever saw Ha Ha Tonka play was at a bowling alley in New Jersey. Despite the thunder of falling pins on both sides of the stage, immediately upon taking the stage Ha Ha Tonka made the entire audience forget where they were. Not only that but they changed the latitude of the place from somewhere in Jersey to somewhere in the Ozarks. Indie rock is still quite deficient in southern rockers. My Morning Jacket has seemingly renounced the genre. The Drive By Truckers are nice enough, but still not enough. Kings of Leon are southern only as a marketing technique. Ha Ha Tonka are legit and they’re my great southern hope. They’re also friends with Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, which makes them even more awesome in my eyes.

[mp3] Brown Recluse – “Contour and Context”

I will be honest; I know nothing about this band or album, having only found it this morning via Pop Tarts Suck Toasted – one of my favorite spots for finding new music – (SMS Note: We featured it in Put It In Your Ears on Friday). I’ve listened to this song only three times but I’ve fallen more in love each time. The horns make it, horns like this just kill me. If you ever want me to write about your band, use horns like this. That is all.

[mp3] There Will Be Fireworks – “Foreign Thoughts”

If there is one thing that I’ve learned this summer it’s that HOLY SHIT I REALLY REALLY REALLY LOVE ALL THESE NEW SCOTISH “EMO” BANDS THAT ARE POURING INTO THIS COUNTRY!! THEY’RE ALL AMAZING, EACH AND EVERY ONE!

I apologize for the caps locks but stuff like Frightened Rabbit, We Were Promised Jetpacks and now There Will Be Fireworks turn me into a screaming little kid on Christmas morning. Foreign Thoughts is one of my favorite songs of this year. Listen to it. Love it.

[mp3] Hospitality – “Betty Wang”

I love the Velvet Underground. Who doesn’t? One of my favorite songs of theirs is “After Hours”, the Maureen Tucker led acoustic sing-along. Maureen was such an underrated part of that band and she certainly foreshadowed the coming of Meg White by a good 30+ years. How is this relevant? Hospitality’s song Betty Wang channels Maureen Tucker perfectly, expanding upon the concept behind After hours and giving the lady the attention and due she always deserved. A great, catchy little ditty.

[mp3] Steven Mark – “Paris Hilton Generation”

There is so much to be angry about these days (no, “death panels” are not one of them) and yet so few people seem mad. Well, on “Paris Hilton Generation”, Steven Mark is mad as hell and he’s not going to take it any more. Rightly eviscerating my generation for our indulgent and spoiled ways, this REM-eque folk rocker burns harder than anything else out there today.

[mp3] Dum Dum Girls – “Ship of Love”

One of the highlights of last month’s no-fi Woodsist festival was the Dum Dum Girls. Apparently Sup Pop thought so too because they signed them a week later. This is my favorite track.

[mp3] Firewater – “This Is My Life”

I’ve had this gypsy-punk song on my ipod for over a year now and I’ve loved this song for over a year now. And for a year now, I’ve been trying to figure out just what instrument this song is based around. I have had some thoughts (guitar with a really weird effect? distorted banjo? some sort of accordion?) but whenever I figure it out I realize I have no clue what I’m talking about. I suppose it doesn’t matter; the song is great either way.

[mp3] Johnson and Jonson – “Hold On John”

OH MY GOD, RAPPERS HAVE DISCOVERED THE PLASTIC ONO BAND! RUN FOR THE HILLS! RUN!

Oh wait, this is some dope shit. As they say in “hip-hop” circles. Word to ya motha.

I am not a hip hop critic, obviously. But I do know this is a pretty sweet appropriation of a John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band song.

[mp3] Glam Chops – “Are You Ready Eddie, Eddie Are You Ready?”

This is absolutely the most unoriginal song I’ve ever heard (if I had the time I could detail where each part of this song is nicked from, but in short, it’s mainly a Ramones rip with a dash of some other band from the No Thanks Box Set who I cannot remember at the moment) but it also just happens to be the best thing that Eddie Argos has released since the first Art Brut album, if not ever. I cannot wait for a Glam Chops full length.

[mp3] Harlem Shakes – “Y Control (Yeah Yeah Yeahs Cover)”

All those other indie bands, they’re the girls you fool around with. The Harlem Shakes are the one you marry. The Harlem Shakes is the band you love almost unconditionally without even knowing why. They’re the band that, when you begin to question your love for them slightly, they go and release something like this cover of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Y Control that is so perfect that you fall in love with them all over again. If anything this cover almost sounds like The Walkmen and it is better than the original YYY version. Download it now.

One comment for “Hype Device X: Holy Crap It’s Hot Out Edition!”

  1. [...] I had to borrow my sister’s ipod for a workout Saturday and this came up. So this song is her’s, really. The lead singer to this group, Tod A., apparently toured Asia for some other sounds which resulted in this album. The album has a lot of influences like ska, klezmer, and gypsy, but this bhangra influenced song is the definitely the best.Source: http://radioexile.com/2009/08/12/hype-device-x-holy-crap-its-hot-out-edition/ [...]
