Hype Device XI: I’m Gonna Stop Numbering These Soon Edition

Sooooo, I took about a month off from posting on this site. I think Shawn hates me now. Oh well, I probably deserve it. Anyways, in an effort to win back his love and affection, here are five great songs that deserve some hypin’ love!

Awesome songs from Yellow Ostrich, The Big Pink, The Music Tapes, The Beets, and The Drums after the proverbial jump…

[mp3] Yellow Ostrich – “Barefooted Coal” (demo)

One of my favorite finds while writing for Radio Exile has been The Chairs and the side project of their front man, Yellow Ostrich. This is a demo of Barefooted Coal, a song slated for a future, as of yet unannounced release. The distorted organ on this song is one of the best sounds I’ve heard in awhile. Whenever I listen to this track it leaves me with my butt feeling sore since it kicks so much ass. You know a track is good when you listen to it 20 times in a week, as I did with this song.

[mp3] The Big Pink – “Dominos”

With much free time on my hands, I recently decided to intern at a record label. Matador/Beggars Group was nice enough to have me (Can I get an Amen from the choir for that?!), so be expecting a lot more finds from their catalog, current and back. I honestly have no idea who the Big Pink are or anything about them. This song sounds like the Flaming Lips and is catchy as well. I think I’m going to enjoy working with this band….

[mp3] The Music Tapes – “For the Planet Pluto”

Julian Koster is hands down the most interesting person I’ve ever met. Nevermind that he was a vital part of one of my favorite albums of all time (In The Aeroplane Over The Sea), he’s just this incredibly fascinating person. I’ve been lucky enough to hang out with them twice now and both times I’ve left with my understanding of the world altered. That sounds like an exaggeration but I assure you that it’s not. Julian’s music is not for everybody (okay, it’s not for most people) but the people that like him tend to love him. Here is a new single/song he leaked onto his website the other day. It’s classic Music Tapes.

[mp3] The Beets – “Happy But On My Way”

If I’d not seen this band with my own two eyes, I would not believe that this was a modern band out of Queens (Jackson Heights, of all places) but rather some lost Nuggest band out of the Pacific Northwest. Actually, I still am not convinced that they’re not from 1965 Seattle….

[mp3] The Drums – “Let’s Go Surfing”

Every year I see one band play live that despite having never heard them before, blow me away completely. I inevitably leave the show absolutely convinced that this band will be a lot bigger and soon. I’m usually right. In 2005 it was Man Man. 2007 it was Vampire Weekend. 2008 it was The Acorn. And 2009 it was The Drums. You will hear from this guys. I guarantee it. This mp3 off their debut EP doesn’t do their live show justice so I’d highly recommend checking them out. ASAP.
