I Want to Start a Band

artbrut

I wanna start a band. I don’t care that I can barely play guitar, can’t sing, and have no other discernible musical talents. F#ck that! I love music. I wanna start a band.

So I will.

I wanna start a noise pop band. I want to make music that’s slightly experimental, uber-poppy and catchy but also slathered in a layer of fuzz and satisfying lo-fi goodness. I wanna make music you can get passionate about and fall in love with. I want to make music you can sing along with at the top of your lungs as you blast it in your car with the windows down on a hot summer’s day. I want to make simple music that anybody can play. I want to be a part of a band that builds a community around it. I wanna start a band so I have an excuse to start a record label for which to release said band’s music. I want to make music that’s optimistic, wide eyed, non-pretentious. I want to start a scene that’s inclusive, that is that antithesis of all the bullshit that Williamsburg so often is.

I know so much about music, the industry, and the marketing of music today that it kills me I don’t have my own band with which to practice what I know on. With what I know about banding and the internet, if given complete creative control of a band, I know I can make them into something.

Here are some likely questions and their respective answers about this new endeavor:

What will this band’s influences be?

To make this simple I uploaded 6 songs to SendSpace. I want this band to operate within the space between all of these songs. Here is the link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/zvx1la

The songs in that folder are: Please Hear Mr Flight Control and What The Single Made The Needle Sing (both by the Music Tapes), His Mister’s Pet Whistle (by the Jeff Mangum/Julian Koster/Kevin Barnes side project, Major Organ and the Adding Machine), Crayon Box (The Gerbils), Approach The Throne (Clues), and Shut Shut Up (Emperor X). If you listen to them all (and they’re all fantastic), you should get a decent idea of what I want to do.

Other influences: Olivia Tremor Control, late period Beatles (and Tomorrow Never Knows), Man Man, Animal Collective, etc.

Will this band be an Art Brut franchise?

Yes.

What will the line up of this band be?

No idea. As imagined right now, I picture two guitars (or maybe one guitar and one banjo), two drummers (ideally), hopefully an accordion or something similar (pipe organ?), some sort of keyboard or synth, hopefully at least one horn (probably trumpet), and then maybe some singing saw or something like that (probably in lieu of the synth). So it’ll be a pretty big band. I want to recapture a lot of what the early Arcade Fire shows were like.

Who is in this band?

Right now, me. As far as everybody else, who ever wants to be. I’m not picky. Skill/talent is not needed. Interest and dedication to the cause is what matters.

What will this band be called?

No idea. Is the Kathleen Turner Overdrive already taken? Yes? Then I have no idea. Suggestions welcome.

Are you serious?

About 95% so, yes.

Will this be an experiment to play with your “all music should be free” bullshit theories?

Yup

Will this be an excuse to further indulge in your Elephant 6 Collective obsessions?

Yup.

Alright, so who is interested? Email me at the link above.

  1. dude, just pull a Rabbit from The Commitments. Only take it one step further. Put a band together and manage them. Get the musicians to teach you how to rock the easiest way possible, then kick someone out and take his place.
