SMS = Totally swamped today, so we’re helping out a bit. In honor of his “crappy day from Hell,” check out Cubic Zirconia‘s video for “Fuck Work” because it’s Friday and we should.

“With the arrival of summer comes the influx of lethargy, and with this comes the release of Fuck Work, a video in which Cubic Zirconia really expresses the spirit of the season. The 4-member musical powerhouse that defies the mold of any set genre delivers a matchless video with the power to put one in a celebratory trance for the months to come. This summer anthem is now available with the click of a button at TheFader.com.”

After receiving an email that said “we” needed to check out The Gary [MySpace], we did (sometimes it really is that simple). “In the Central Texas sunlight, in the full-bore drone of Summer…” Surprisingly, it wasn’t bad at all – not usually our cup o’ tea but it’s good in a way that if and when it pops into our rotation, we won’t punch a baby to make it stop. It’s rock (erm, post-rock) and the crux of this post-rock act is experimentation; the sounds reproduced by the guitars and strings on these tracks are like an unavoidable acid trip. It’s tripped out (and not in the Animal Collective sense) and fun, the lyrics are simply playful and evocative and much of what we’ve heard so far is well worth checking out more. I think we just might.

Check out some tracks from The Gary “after the jump”

[mp3] The Gary – “Damn Machines”
[mp3] The Gary – “I May Have a Drink”

Dave saw no reason why they shouldn’t play in a band called The Gary, and so it began. It should be noted that both were several beers into their river journey, and it seemed like a good idea at the time. The beer-goggle phenomenon applies to band names, as well.

A week or two later, Trey Pool suggested he come and play some guitar. The band was complete. Songs were written and the band checked into East Austin’s infamous Hot Tracks recording studio in November to record the seven-song Chub EP. They began playing shows with bands such as DD/MM/YYYY, Medications, Maserati, and Grant Hart of Husker Du. The band began exchanging prose and verse about a fictive stoner ne’er-do-well named Gary, which will soon be made available in chapbook format. Suddenly, being called The Gary didn’t seem like such a bad thing, after all.

The Gary’s sound is as rooted in a sense of place as it is in their influences (Silkworm, Guided By Voices, Chicago post-rock, New Zealand noise-rock, etc.). Lyrics and song delivery convey the sense of defeat accompanied by “getting by” in their Austin/Central Texas surroundings…

…not to mention the unfathomable heat that drives us into rivers and causes us to form bands with peculiar names.

The Gary is Dave Norwood on bass and vocals, Trey Pool on guitar, and Paul Warner on drums.

“Hailing from Long Island New York and weighing in at a bone-crushing, ear-splitting, ass-kicking, neck-breaking 750 pounds of pure metal mastery; ladies and gentlemen, BURNING THE MEMORY!!!” [Myspace] Is that intro “metal” enough for you? It certainly suits the vibe of their debut release So Long The Dreamer.

Since forming in 2005, Burning The Memory have worked hard to create the sound they are known for and while many bands in the area have leaned towards antagonistically savage music, Burning The Memory have maintained their melodic metal roots. Although the band in its current form is fairly new, they are no strangers to Long Island’s metal and hardcore scene and the founding members have been playing together in various bands for years. The current line-up consists of Osvaldo Estevez (Vocals), Tim Di Martino (Guitar), Domenick Giardina (Guitar), Andres Barbosa (Bass), and Anthony Parlato (Drums).

Produced by Dean Baltulonis (Sick of it All, Madball, This is Hell, Most Precious Blood) Burning The Memory will be releasing their debut effort So Long The Dreamer through Spare Change Records on April 7.

With an intense live show, powerful songs, and a massive sound, BtM have the full package due to their DIY/indie attitude and the commitment to “make it”. The band’s strength comes from the seamless integration of Dom and Tim’s slick guitar work, Ozzie’s chillingly guttural growls, and a rhythm section held boomingly tight by Dre and Tony. Burning the Memory has a little something for every type of metal fan: thrashy riffs to chugging breakdowns, from screams of terror to melodic hooks. Delve deeper past the powerful riffs into the lyrics and you may find yourself lost in a journal of heartache, betrayal, despair and even a little hope. With a mixture of influences and musical elements like Killswitch Engage, Unearth, All That Remains, Hell Within, Darkest Hour, Lamb of God, Machine Head, Sworn Enemy, Six Feet Under, Full Blown Chaos, and Shadows Fall, we can only predict the eventual rising popularity of this group. No flash in the pan here.

Never ones to sit still, BtM is already in the studio working on new material for future releases. And with a little support, you can see them hitting the road sooner than later. So get out and see them now up close and personal. If you wait too long it might cost you $50 and a nosebleed seat in a stadium.

Two weeks ago, Stephen Colbert interviewed Stanford University Internet Law professor Lawrence Lessig and they discussed whether copyright laws should be updated to include remixing. Since then fans have started creating remixes of the interview and now Stephen is encouraging them to continue. The clip below is Stephen warning/encouraging viewers to stop/continue these videos.

Stephen does not — NOT — want you to take his interview with Lawrence Lessig and remix it with a pumping k-hole groove. I have to get to work on my version very soon, but here’s the video promoting/discouraging the remixing:

Since I started on my new work/life endeavor, I have been really getting into some of the older “progressive/chill” electronic music that was all the rage in the early “naughties”. It’s put my head in a bit of a different space, so to speak, so I asked SMS if I could post about someone that a friend introduced me to: Kodomo [Official Site, Myspace]. His warm, sensuous melodies will make any lady want to “cuddle”, so check it out.

Emmy-nominated Chris Child, aka Kodomo , lives and works in New York City as a full-time composer, and is known for his music featured in television, independent film and video games. Although born in the US, he had lived in four different countries and spoke three languages by the age of 18.

“I picked up the nickname Kodomo in Japan because it means ‘child’ in Japanese,” Chris explains. After attending high school in South Korea, he came back to the US to study composition at Berklee College of Music in the US, graduating in 1999.

Kodomo has done remixes for the artists Freezepop, Omar Faruk, Dead Radar, Xandy Barry, and Sara Fimm. His music is featured in the Harmonix video games Amplitude, Frequency, and the iPod video game Phase, and he has also composed music for several independent films, including the award-winning documentary Silences by director Octavio Graham.

When asked about his work, Kodomo says, “I’m interested in exploring how non-musical mediums such as images, objects, landscapes, science and weather can be used as conceptual material for musical exploration. Much of my music is motivated by places and experiences.”

Kodomo’s wide range of musical influences includes everything from Brian Eno and Erik Satie to DJ Shadow, Kraftwerk, J.S. Bach and Cabaret Voltaire. Using recycled beats and his penchant for minimalism and film music, he’s managed to create a compelling form of impressionist electro that emphasizes warm sounds, melodic development and pulsing beats.

If a band had 4 different drummers on their latest album, you’d normally assume that these guys didn’t know what they’re doing. In the case of Jubilee [Official Site, Myspace], you’d be almost completely off-base, mostly because two of the major contributors to the recordings sessions were Trent Reznor and one Maynard James Keenan.

As their manager put it: “You can catch these guys live at a dump near you (if you live in the land of cod and crumpets)” as we speak, so don’t hesitate to check them out if you’re on the other side of “the pond”.

Check out the latest song and some behind the scenes stuff “after the jump”

Check out Jubilee’s “Fuzz Are Down” (the B-side on the “Rebel Hiss” single) here

Tour Dates
September 26th – Belfast, Ireland @ Auntie Annie’s
September 27th – Galway, Ireland @ Roisin Dubh
September 28th – Cork, Ireland @ Savoy Theater
September 30th – Limerick, Ireland @ Dolan’s
October 1st – Dublin, Ireland @ Whelan’s
October 2nd – Derry, Ireland @ Nerve Centre

“The march toward Jubilee’s first album began in January with the release of the “Rebel Hiss” single and a tour of Europe. It continued in August and September with the release of another single from the LA based band, “In With The Out Crowd,” and a second tour of Europe. Each single contains three exclusive B-sides unavailable on any other release, including their upcoming album. These are available as immediate digital downloads direct from the band at http://Jubilee.la.

The derelicts responsible for all of this noise are Aaron North on vocals and guitar (Nine Inch Nails, Buddyhead, The Icarus Line), Michael Shuman on vocals and bass (Queens of the Stone Age, Wires On Fire), Jeff Lynn on guitar and organ (Wires On Fire), and Troy Petrey on drums (The Icarus Line).

The guest drummers on this latest release (the band chose to record all of their songs with different “skin-beaticians”) include: Julian Gross (Liars), Nick Jago (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club), Trent Reznor on programmed drums (Nine Inch Nails), Maynard James Keenan (The band made an exception to the rule on this one. Keenan didn’t play drums, but sang on “I Don’t Have An Excuse, I Just Need A Little Help”)

After concluding the tour, the band will mix and master their first full-length album, which will include even more guests on the drum-stool, such as:

Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Joey Castillo (Queens of the Stone Age), Carla Azar (Autolux), Josh Freese (Devo, A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails), Kevin Haskins (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, Tones On Tail), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal), Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters).

Watch a preview of Jubilee and Maynard James Keenan in the studio here.

Just last week, we were hanging out at Green Label Sound Launch Party and got to catch these cats in action [Brooklyn Vegan]. After seeing just how they tore the place apart, it’s no wonder that Matt and Kim [Official Site, Myspace] are one of SMS’ favorite acts in the world – he’s seen them 5-6 times without us and every time – “Whoa, you missed a good one!” This Green Label show was so good, Shawn ended up with pneumonia again!

Matt & Kim are completely punk-rock (and apparently don’t know it!) and they just want to have fun.

Come see what all the fuss is about “after the jump”

At the Show host Brendon hangs out at The Echoplex‘s “F Yeah Fest” with indie rock duo Matt and Kim, who play their hit song, “Cut Down”.

“Matt and Kim have developed a fast-paced cocktail of kick and snare mixed with anthemic, synth-driven choruses. Since coming together as a band in 2004, their feverish enthusiasm and blinding live sets have won them critical acclaim and devoted fans – a perfect fit for the Green Label Sound lineup.”

Check out their new single below and download it for free from Green Label. I would re-post it here, but their legal mumbo-jumbo frightened me too much.

No one ever takes tragic news well. With all the chaos and natural tragedies in this country and the world lately, a small plane crash may seem trivial in the grand picture. Only because that plane was carrying a few famous rockstars does it get our attention. As if any other lives lost on a daily basis are any less relevant. Albeit, we here at Radio Exile do report on music related news and it seems only appropriate that something so serious be addressed.

News reports and more info on Travis Barker and DJ AM after the jump…

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and a popular disc jockey were critically injured in a Learjet crash in South Carolina that killed four people, authorities said Saturday.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the plane carrying six people was departing shortly before midnight Friday when air traffic controllers reporting seeing sparks. The plane went off a runway and crashed on a nearby road, she said.

Hospital spokeswoman Beth Frits said Barker and DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, were in critical condition at a burn center in Augusta, Ga., about 75 miles southwest of Columbia.

Two other passengers and two crew members died, said the National Transportation Safety Board. Their identities were not immediately available.

Barker and Goldstein, who perform together under the name TRVSDJ-AM, played a free concert in Columbia’s college neighborhood Friday night.

“It’s absolutely terrible and tragic,” Columbia Mayor Bob Coble said.

A representative for Barker and DJ AM said she had no information the crash.

After Blink 182, Barker went on to form the rock band (+44) — pronounced “plus forty-four.” He starred in the MTV reality series “Meet the Barkers” with former Miss USA Shanna Moakler, to whom he was married at the time. The show documented the former couple’s lavish wedding and life.

Goldstein at one time was engaged to celebrity Nicole Richie. – by Page Ivey [Associated Press]

A friend of Travis Barker and DJ AM has revealed to E! News some grim new details about last night’s plane crash, which the two survived but four others did not.

AM is “really, really badly burned,” according to the source, who confirms that “his face is very burned.” The source adds, “More than 50 percent of his body is burned and the worst is on his face.”

The friend also said that Barker was burned “mostly from the waist down.”

Both men are in critical but stable condition at the Joseph Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga. E! News was told by the source that, as of this morning, DJ AM was being “kept in an incubator” as part of his treatment in order to maintain a sterile environment and prevent infections.

The source also said that AM was looking forward to coming home last night and, in fact, e-mailed a picture to a friend that showed him standing next to the Learjet right before the ill-fated takeoff. “He sent a picture being like, ‘Hey, I’m coming home on this ride.’”

Another source reports that Barker’s ex-wife, Shanna Moakler, who was just spotted with him Wednesday night at the Janet Jackson concert in Los Angeles, has left their Calabasas, Calif., home and is headed to Georgia to be with him.

As for Barker’s friend and business partner “Lil’ Chris” Baker, who died in the crash: E! has learned that Baker was newly married and had a new baby. “He was the sweetest, nicest guy. He was like Travis’ right-hand man.”

Baker often appeared on Travis and Shanna’s MTV reality series Meet the Barkers, which aired in 2005 and 2006. – by Ken Baker [E! Online]

This is all tragic and my heart goes out to the family and friends of all who were killed or injured. The reports say “critical but stable condition.” My day job is in emergency healthcare and I can tell you that from the short description of how in-depth the injuries are, don’t underestimate the term ‘critical.’ These are very serious injuries and I can only hope these two can heal from this. This story won’t end anytime soon and they have a very long road to recovery. There’s no way to lessen a tragedy but let’s hope that the ensuing investigations don’t reveal anything “sketchy.”

From his sick-bed, our commander-in-chief dished out the command to bring visual musicology to the people. Well, he didn’t word it quite so eloquently through the mild hell that is the flu. Poor dude. So I ventured out into the wild wild web to find something spectacular that you should partake of. Travis [Myspace] (the band, not some random guy) has an exceptionally captivating video out for their song “J. Smith” off the forthcoming Ode to J. Smith and you should make SMS feel better and watch it now.

Check out more of Travis including mp3s “after the jump”

This video has to be watched twice. The first time you will likely be too enthralled in what’s going to happen to this poor bastard to actually listen to the music. So when you’re done internalizing how much this would suck if it happened to you, watch it again and listen to the song which is pretty good. Simple guitar and drums crescendo with a church choir type thing. Fun times.

I have always been excessively critical of Slipknot. I’m just barely a fan of their music. They’re not that great live, although the theatrics are respectable; nine guys in the band seems gimmicky if not ridiculous. I have yet to understand how they have made it as big as they have, I have seen them live twice (and I do actually own an album), but I just don’t get the hype. Which is exactly what I peg it as – hype.

Rants and videos after the jump…

Well, now I know where this type of unwarranted hype comes from. On the heels of their new album that dropped this past Tuesday the 26th, the band is trying to go number 1 on Billboard, I can’t fault them for that if they think they have a chance.

I guess they are still really miffed about only debuting at number 2 with 243,000 units first week for their last outing in 2004. I understand the need for unique and unusual marketing in this day and age to get your name out but this has gone too far. The band has promoted and called to arms all of their New York City fans to ‘guerilla style’ overrun national morning newscasts ABC’s “”GMA” and NBC’s “Today Show” dressed like dorks and sporting the band name to promote the new album. As far as I can count, it looks like two kids showed up in black t-shirts with a poster to “terrorize” the Today Show and I couldn’t see how many showed up at GMA to “wreak havoc” being that they film on the second floor. Wow, that will certainly make Slipknot number 1. High five guys, job well done.

What ever happened to addressing your target audience? Do we really think that tween and twentysomething mainstream metalheads are up watching the news at 7 am on a Saturday morning? Forchrissake people! Have you ever tried to convince your grandma to listen to Slipknot? This would get the same type of ridiculous outcome. Some people would laugh, most would be offended and some poor old lady might be overtly stunned and swallow her teabag or choke on a crumpet. C’mon you nincompoops, leave the “shocking crap” to Marilyn Manson; he’s mastered it and we all expect it. This is just a weak-ass cry for help in a flailing music universe and your label put you up to it. For shame.

Oh, did I mention they’re making this push for sales to stay ahead of rapper The Game who’s expected to move 250,000 units first week? (Who the hell made that prediction?) If they wanted to be really shocking they would pull this stunt at a taping of Showtime at the Apollo. That’ll steal away some of The Game’s fans for sure!

You know what, I feel so bad that no one came out to show support that I’m gonna go the extra step to help these guys out. I mean, I already promoted their release and I do feel a little bad for them. So here’s a video of them headlining Mayhem fest a few weeks ago. You might as well see them to know what you’re getting yourself into before you become one of the “maggots.”
