Dead Meadow on Dirty Laundry TV

On this week’s Dirty Laundry TV, Dead Meadow sit down to discuss their new film and soundtrack and several bad acid trips. Seriously? I just had one bad one. That was enough to learn my lesson.

Their new album, Old Growth, is out now on Matador Records. Check out a track and this week’s episode “after the jump” …read full article…

Video Hook-Up: Hostage – “Roll”

ROLL

I usually like to write up a video or talk up a track, but I will let the label do that this time. Just seems more “fun” (I am super effing busy!)

“Everyone knows that Hostage is an unstoppable music-making beast of legendary proportions pumping out hit after hit, week in and week out. And he’s been a busy, busy boy since his Radio 1 Essential mix earlier in the summer, playing alongside Annie Mac at the Manchester Apollo, Rockness Festival and he set the Arcadia Afterburner stage at Glastonbury ablaze -literally! Not to be restrained in the slightest, he’s back with 2 killer new tunes on this, his first free EP on Nightshifters.

With “Roll” we see Hostage shows us a slightly more subtle hand, well, that’s before the bass drops! With “The Ba$$” he’s back at his no-holds-barred-kicking-down-the-fucking-rave-door approach with one of the most ridiculous noise-bass drops you’ll hear this year. It’s massive!!”

TENNIS w/ Night Manager, Cool Runnings, Family Portrait, Magic Bullets (Glasslands Gallery, 8/26/10, Brooklyn)

Denver lo-fi pop duo Tennis have gotten a lot of press recently after the release of their 7” on Underwater Peoples. I succumbed to the pressure from friends to check out their tunes [link] and I couldn’t help but to draw comparisons to Beach House, She & Him, and Wild Nothing who put out three of my favorite records of the year, so I naturally got excited when I heard they were playing Glasslands Gallery in southside Williamsburg. …read full article…

Video Hook-Up: MGMT – “Congratulations”

New MGMT, “Congratulations”. You might have heard it. You might have seen it already too, but I like it, so I will keep sharing it. I am, however, very weirded out by the fleshy AT-AT.

Their sophomore release, Congratulations, is in stores now.

Wendy’s “Always Serves It Right Away”

Wow, Wendy’s knows how to do it, eh? Rainy day in NYC, I almost WANT one of these, but I wouldn’t be caught dead drinking Sanka.

[Thanks to Jon for the tip!]

Video Hook-Up: The Sword – “Tres Brujas”

The Sword just unveiled the video for their super rad song “Tres Brujas” from Warp Riders, which is out today! Go pick it up or I will smash you in the face (with a pillow and some hugs, maybe?).

Video Hook-Up: Cee Lo Green – “F*ck You” [NSFW]

“The man” keeping you down this dreary, rainy (at least in NYC) Monday morning. Here’s a great “lyric video” for Cee Lo’s wonderfully infectious “F*ck You” for all of you to sink your teeth into. Watch out, though, the lyrics are pretty NSFW, so don’t listen unless you are rock some rad headphones or something and DON’T read along. If it doesn’t at least make you chuckle, you have no soul.*

(just kidding, I am a ginger and gingers seem to be missing theirs, so I am mad about it)

Visit www.ceelogreen.com to get the news on Ceelo’s upcoming album The Ladykiller and receive a free download of another new track “Georgia”.

Video Hook-Up: The Sword – “Maiden, Mother & Crone”

Ahead of tonight’s Strikeforce: Houston card, I have a ton of work to do at home (the wife will probably kill me for even taking a second to type this out!), but since this is what I am listening to, I was hoping you’d like to listen to it as well. “Maiden, Mother & Crone” comes from The Sword’s sophomore effort, Gods of the Earth, out now on Kemado Records. Their new album, Warp Riders, will hit stores August 24th.

Antony and the Johnsons Premiere “Thank You For Your Love”

Brand new clip for Antony and the Johnsons‘ “Thank You For Your Love” which features some really, really old Super 8 footage from Antony’s first months (years maybe?) here in NYC and it’s really quite a moving piece. The tune is the title track on a forthcoming EP that is being released in the UK and Europe by Rough Trade on August 23rd and on August 24th in North America by Secretly Canadian.

Video Hook-Up: Little Gold – “Bird’s Eye”

Little Gold is the Brooklyn-based act from former Woods/Meneguar member Christian DeRoeck, who released a full length (On The Knife) last year and a 7″ with Heart Break Beat Records (Beach House) last month. The trio is currently on a national tour to support the 7″ and get their name out there.

Public Enemy (Central Park Summerstage, NYC, 8/16/10)

Photo – Andrew St. Clair

On 8/16/2010 on Central Park Summerstage, Chuck D of Public Enemy said that they don’t perform in NYC very often, but then they do it’s like an eclipse. It’s special.

And during a nearly 90 minute set, it was nothing but! PE played many if not all of their classics including ‘Terminator X to The Edge of Panic’, ‘Welcome To the Terrordome’, ‘Bring The Noise’, ‘Don’t Believe The Hype’, ‘Shut ‘Em Down’, ‘Cold Lampin’ With Flavor’, ‘Burn Hollywood Burn’, & ‘Fight The Power’. Basically something for everyone. To see Chuck D and Flavor Flav (who are now in their 50′s) jumping up and down and running side to side non-stop is a sight to behold. And, while Flavor Flav may be the self proclaimed ‘reality star of the decade’, he’s at his best on stage as the best hypeman in the biz.

Public Enemy is on tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their 3rd album, Fear of a Black Planet. A dense sample-based epic that was more about social issues and empowerment within the black community and absolutely not about about ‘bling and bitches’.

Check out a ton of pictures of Chuck and Flav “after the jump”.

Video Hook-Up: The Lamb and The Tyger – “Harmonices Mundi”

I stole this clip from our good friend Mason (lead singer of a’tris) who blogs here. Holy ess, all of this is beyond amazing, eh? It’s a video clip for The Lamb and The Tyger‘s “Harmonices Mundi” and the animation is, well, rad. The vocalist sounds a bit like Ben Folds (a personal favorite of mine), but I really, really love this video.

Rad videos can set the scene for a great song or even turn a good song into a memorable one.

Stormtrooper-ing in the Rain?

If there is anything that makes me happier in this world than watching other people dance, I haven’t found it yet. Here, an intrepid Stormtrooper and two CGI buddies “cut a rug” to the tune of “Singin’ in the Rain”.

Justin Stivers Readies Pet Ghost Project EP

After leaving The Antlers to focus his own work, Justin Stivers has finally put his solo career into motion, with two full albums sitting under his belt. The first release will be his own winter variations EP, set for release on September 14.

According to Justin, “winter variations is a product of schizophrenia. After nearly a year of tracking and mixing Pet Ghost Project’s newest LP Shelf Life (set for release in 2011), focus meandered. The slow process of releasing an album just wasn’t sitting right. (We) were constantly waiting – waiting for the label, waiting for funds, waiting for others to give the go ahead. Enter winter variations, an album born of urgency and immediate gratification. Re-arranging one song off of each album they’ve done in the past and recorded in just 3 short hours (all in one or two takes) at Serious Business Records in New York City. This EP is Pet Ghost Project stripped of all pretension and excess.”

Pet Ghost Project will celebrate the release of winter variations with a special hometown show on September 10 at Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn with Miniboone, Quiet Loudly, and Gunfight!

Kristen Bell and Her BFF in Yeasayer’s “Madder Red” Video

Gosh, Kristen Bell is still so very, very foxy. Yeah, there is a disgusting tumor monster thing in most of this video, but I love the band and the song – too bad Guardian has the exclusive, eh?

Oh well, go check out Yeasayer‘s “Madder Red” video, from Odd Blood at Guardian.

Video Hook-Up: Kids of 88 – “Downtown”

Kids of 88 – Downtown (Official Video) from Dryden Street on Vimeo.

A few days ago, our good buddies at The Music Slut premiered this clip, but we like it to, so we’re all about sharing it with you all.

Kids of 88 describe their music as a “whimful combination of dirt spitting kicks and feathering grit. An overdose of nightlife; the lubricated moan of spilt vodka. The hard realization of concrete and the happiness of blurry vision. An alleyway gangbang between Grandmaster Flash and The Knack.”

That’s intense, we like it – please enjoy, homies.

The Swell Season cover “Two-Headed Boy”

The Swell Season covers Neutral Milk Hotel

If you haven’t heard much of the AV Club’s Undercover series, you’re an idiot. Ha, just kidding. This week, there’s finally a relevant piece for those Neutral Milk Hotel fans that go nuts every time we write up something on the band – with only four weeks to go on the show, The Swell Season chose to cover NMH’s “Two-Headed Boy” for the sessions, which despite the usual fears about covers of the band, was pretty awesome.

In case you forgot, The Swell Season are Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová from Once, winners of Best Original Song Oscar in 2008.

White Panda Continue Promoting “Rematch”

The White Panda are a mash-up/remix duo (Tom Evans (aka Procrast) and Dan Griffith (aka DJ Griffi)) based out of Chicago and the city of Angels. The duo released their debut album, entitled Versus, on December 28, 2009 and just released their latest album Rematch, on July 2nd, 2010. I want them to remix my office — take the humdrum noise of, well, nothing, and replace it with a bit o’ nothing sprinkled with more rad beats.

That’s just what I think, anyway.

Peter Wolf Crier on The Guest Apartment

Watch the full concert at baeblemusic.com

“Though they’re a bit more accustomed to green fields, cool lakes, and the shaded cover of the North Woods, Minnesotan duo Peter Wolf Crier seem right at home amongst the traffic humming by on Houston and First Ave in this segment of The Guest Apartment at Little Veselka in the LES. Preparing three bluesy and soulful songs from the band’s recently released, Jagjaguwar debut Inter-Be, the band interacted with passersby (with help from one adorable observer in particular), taking time to discuss the roots of their album and how it shaped their identity as musicians along the way. ”
