Remember when we first brought Parades into your lives a few months back? (Damn, that video for “Loserspeak in New Tongue” was awesome!) Now, the band are readying their debut, which will be coming out on Dot Dash, and we’ve got a preview at one of the great new tracks.

Check out a sample of what the band’s been up to “after the jump”

Parades are a young art-rock band from Sydney, signed to the independent label, Dot Dash and have wisely chosen to produce their debut album in band member Jonathan Boulet’s garage. Jonathan has had considerable success in his own right as a solo artist signed to the Modular label.

The results are ambitious and undeniably refreshing. The new material chases the expansive and grandiose leanings hinted at on their early radio-favorite “Dead Nationale”. The young band effortlessly achieves a dynamic whitewash of pop harmonies, post- rock guitars and electronic meanderings. Somewhere amidst the blog hype it has been described as “the results of unhinged jam session”.

Parades recently toured with Seabellies, headlined a national album launch tour of Australia and will shortly tour with Sally Seltmann and Passion Pit:

Upcoming Dates
July 24, 2010 The Heritage Hotel

LA-based duo, The Polyamorous Affair are gearing up for the release of their latest album, Strange Bedfellows. To celebrate, they’re just handing out mp3s, yo. The first, “Hypnotized,” finds the electro-poppers bending African drums and synth into a bizarre, refreshing and kick-effing-ass dreamscape (I won’t lie, I just wanted to say “dreamscape” today).

Check out more info on the new album and grab the mp3 “after the jump”

The Polyamorous Affair is a nomadic-by-way-of-Los Angeles duo who weave a rich fantasy world into their own mischievous brand of electronic pop. The duo which formed in Denmark in 2007 is comprised of Eddie Chacon and Sissy Sainte-Marie who currently divide their time between Copenhagen and Berlin. This summer they release their 3rd album, Strange Bedfellows. Widely acclaimed across the board from NME to Dazed Digital to bedroom bloggers, The Polyamorous Affair have become known for their strategic simplicity, chilly beats and warm vibes, all set in some bizarre frame of opulence. Their latest release finds the two conjuring up a strangely seductive electronic hybrid laced with haunting guitars and live percussion that pull you in, spellbound. Their live show is a multi-media experience featuring pioneering Visualist Mr. Cocoon.

Strange Bedfellows, the third release from The Polyamorous Affair finds the duo offering surprisingly few duets, instead each branching into two distinct styles. The album breathes and pulsates with vibrancy and balance. Eddie reconnects with his soul roots and traditional songwriting while Sissy taps into dreams and trails off on mystical disco byways. The alluringly distant front woman is at times angelic (Softer and Softer, The Avenues) and at times possessed by the Harlot of Babylon (Fantasy, Hypnotized), entities she seems to exorcise on the album’s grande finale, Rebel. Eddie floats with mercilessly beauty in flawless falsetto over big swinging beats (Strange, Shadows) and surprises us with some masterful guitar skills he has humbly hidden up his sleeve (Shadows, Swan Song, Rebel).

Currently the the band is in Europe collaborating with directors from each country they visit on videos for Strange Bedfellows.

Yes, yes, Hell-friggin-yes.

Six weeks until I get to have my face rocked off (once again) by one of my favorite bands in the world: The Sword. No, I am not kidding or being ironic, I consider their third full-length, Warp Riders, among my most eagerly anticipated albums of the year.

Today, Kemado Records and The Sword gave us a little sample of what the band has in store on August 24th and, evidently, the “metal stalwarts” (saw it in the press release and had to use it!) will reveal the album’s plot in more detail through a three-part video saga beginning with the “Tres Brujas” video, followed by clips for “Lawless Lands” and “Night City.”

After the jump, you’ll find more info and goodies from the band.

King of The Beach, originally slated for an Aug. 3 release date, will now be available via iTunes exclusively on July 1, all other digital outlets on July 13 and the physical street date (CD / LP) remains Aug. 3.

Bio:

In the life of Nathan Williams, the year of 2009 will go down as both a highlight reel and a total shit show. Meteorically, feverishly and somewhat improbably, two albums worth of naïve punk rock he recorded behind his parents’ San Diego home as Wavves became a sensation in the world of indie music. As a result, passports got filled, capers got pulled off and lots of good things got said about the music in both print and digital ink, plus in actual human voices. At the same time, fights got fought, situations got hairy and people got indignant and mean.

Oh well. Fuck it. All of it.

What’s important now is that, in the beginning of 2010, Williams made King of the Beach, the new Wavves album. King of the Beach is an adventurous and ambitious record. It cuts deeper into the bleeding throat catharsis and ’60s sunshine soul that Wavves is known for. It also unexpectedly flips out with elements of primitive electronics and psychedelic studio experimentation.

“There was a conscious effort going into this that I didn’t want to make the same record again. I already made the same record twice, with the same fucking cover art,” says Williams. “It wasn’t overbearing, but I didn’t want to recreate something I’d done. I wanted to make something bigger, something stronger.”

Unlike Wavves’ previously released material, recorded in haphazard bursts on Williams’ laptop, King of the Beach was toiled over for three months at Sweet Tea Recording, a world-renown studio in Oxford, Mississippi. Sweet Tea is also the home of Dennis Herring, producer of the last two Modest Mouse albums, and the man who dismantled and re-assembled the sound on this record.

All the rumors are true: Herring is a studio perfectionist. Williams is not. “There were some definite ‘I want to wring you neck’-type moments,” Williams says of the sessions, but he also understood that, with the resources he had available to him, he’d be stupid not to make the album sound exactly how he wanted it. “When you’re not watering it down with a load of shit and reverb, it’s a lot harder to make a record, because you know every part is going to be heard perfectly. You can’t half-ass anything,” says Williams. “A lot more effort went into this than with previous Wavves records.”

Another marked difference in the making of King of the Beach was that Williams wrote and recorded two songs with bassist Stephen Pope and drummer Billy Hayes, the duo who became his touring band at the end of 2009. Pope and Hayes formerly backed recently departed garage rock force of nature Jay Reatard. Williams met the two after his infamously disastrous performance at the Primavera Sound Festival in Spain. “I think we all agree that they squeegeed me up, because I melted down,” says Williams.

Though there is a confidence in the scope of the album-from the title track’s denim on sand anthem-baiting to the tweaked pop of “Convertable Balloon” to the unabashed prettiness of “When Will You Come”-Williams’ usual lyrical themes of self-loathing are still impossible to ignore. “I think everybody feels that way sometimes. I know everybody feels that way sometimes. You’re a fucking liar if you don’t,” says Williams. “It wouldn’t make sense if I’m feeling a certain way to not write about it. There are songs about hating myself, but there are also songs about driving in a car with a balloon and playing Nintendo too.”

In the end, though, King of the Beach is not an album for the miserable. While the verses of “Take on the World” enumerate the things Williams hates (his writing, his music, his self) the chorus resolves into a simple, bold repeated phrase: “To take on the world would be something.”

The album title King of the Beach isn’t meant to be ironic or a self-deprecating joke. It’s a declaration. “Without sounding cheesy, we all wanted to make something inspiring,” says Williams. “It’s the type of thing where you have this much, but you could have more, so go get it.”

Just heard the news regarding the rad, rad, rad soundtrack for the movie I am most anticipating this summer, Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World. Previously, we knew that the music for Scott’s band, SEX BOB-OMB, was written and performed by Beck. For the movie’s soundtrack, the actors from the movie perform the vocals – neat touch. So, this piece of awesome is released on August 10 from ABKCO. I hope I can get my hands on a copy ahead of time.

Like I said, I can’t wait.

The film opens August 13th and will feature a score from Radiohead/Beck collaborator Nigel Godrich, which will eventually see digital release. So “full of win”.

Illinois-makers (ha!) Elsinore have put together an immaculate track here with the tune “Yes Yes Yes” (which you can grab in a minute, bear with us). With the announcement that the Yes Yes Yes full length will be dropping August 10th, we’re salivating. Or, we’re at least very happy. The band are a blast of fresh air, not a breath; knocking the wind from our lungs with fun, energetic melodies and tunes of “the simplistic bliss of life in the Midwest”.

More info and tour dates “after the jump”

[mp3] Elsinore – “Yes Yes Yes”

Summer Tour Dates (more to come):

06.12 Taste of Champaign-Urbana (Champaign, IL)
06.12 Independent Music and Arts Festival (Indianapolis, IN)
06.24 Summerfest (Milwaukee, WI)
07.13 Mike N’ Molly’s (Champaign, IL)
08.13 Firebird (St Louis, MO)
08.14 Canopy Club (Champaign, IL)
08.20 Black Sparrow (Lafayette, IN)
08.21 Radio Radio (Indianapolis, IN)
08.26 Blind Pig (Ann Arbor, MI)
08.27 The Strutt (Kalamazoo, MI)
08.28 Mulligan’s (Grand Rapids, MI)
09.02 Lemon Grove (Youngstown, OH)
09.03 Howler’s Cafe (Pittsburgh, PA)
09.04 Labyrinth Press Co. – early show (Jamestown, NY)
09.04 Mojo’s – late show (Jamestown, NY)
09.05 Bug Jar (Rochester, NY)

Recorded over two years and a thousand studio hours, Yes Yes Yes is a textured and dynamic song-scape. The album flows organically through epic, passionate rockers (Landlocked, Gasoline), hushed and intimate confessions (Body of Water, Breathing Light), and playful accounts of legendary locals (Chemicals). Groff’s unmistakable voice elicits moods of vulnerability and positivity, and pulls from the entire spectrum of love itself.

The album was co-produced with Adam Schmitt (HUM, Headlights) and Anthony Gravino, and was mastered by Jon Pines (Billy Bragg & Wilco, Jay Bennett, Braid) in Champaign-Urbana, IL.

Yes Yes Yes is much more than a statement of positivity. It’s an enthusiastic realization; an honest and autobiographical display of humanism. These are stories of self-examination, sacrifice, compromise, and lessons learned, all leading to the avoidance of a quarter-life crisis.

With the World Cup a mere 8 days away, football (or soccer) fever is in full effect. Our friends at The Fader have teamed with Nike Sportswear to present Pitch Perfect, a project that will highlight the work of DJs from six continents to show off the sport’s global reach.

Get more info “after the jump”

Right now, Pitch Perfect has two mixes up on their site: Brazil’s Maga Bo (who focuses on South American vibes) and the UKs Sinden (who polishes off a tasty European mix). To celebrate, The Fader has teamed up with Nike Sportswear on a project called Pitch Perfect. For the next few weeks, they’re building on the World Cup’s global reach, giving away six free, downloadable mixtapes by DJs from six continents, highlighting artists from their continent. Right now, Pitch Perfect has two DJ mixes up: one from Brazil’s Maga Bo focusing on South America, and one from the UK’s Sinden focusing on Europe.

Beginning June 14, The Fader and Nike will screen a 10-episode documentary series filmed in South Africa, the Cup’s host country. There will also be a big live show June 16 at Nike’s Football Training Center in Soweto, featuring artists from around Africa, streamed live on The Fader‘s website.

Stereogum (*those randy bastards) debuted this great new video from Denmark’s Under Byen, for Alt Er Tabt‘s “Kapitel 1″ (Chapter 1). The song itself is gorgeous and atmospheric and the video and song becomes a synchronized treat, making the visual more haunting by visual artist Sidse Carstens, who was behind their video for “Alt Er Tabt” (All is lost).

As the director states, “I’ve decided to do this as a piece of art, not a music video in the common sense of the word. I often work with different characters in my movies.”

As mentioned earlier, “Kapitel 1″ (Chapter 1) is taken from Under Byen’s recently released fourth album, Alt Er Tabt, available now on Paper Bag Records.

Jesus Makes The Shotgun Sound formed in 2004 with multi-instrumentalist Ramiro Zapata and drum machine Adrian Laguna. After six years, over 500 shows, and a revolving cast of their friends and cultist-like followers, maximalist Lvis Pe Rez and sound conjurer Sergio Camarena balanced the scales. Collectively, Jesus Makes The Shotgun Sound taps into the kind of desperation born of Southern California: vapid consumerism, gang violence and social apathy. The sweeping vision of these young men is to create music that challenges the expectation of the listener, leaving one with the sort of uneasiness usually reserved for personal epiphany or witness to a violent crime.

Jesus Makes The Shotgun Sound’s debut EP Damnant Quod Non Intelligunt carries a distinct aesthetic rooted in the ethos and imagery of the film “Koyaanisqatsi,” which translates into “Life Out of Balance.” The clash of humanity versus nature, the organic vs. synthetic, order into chaos, such is the music of Jesus Makes The Shotgun Sound.

Anyone who knows Radio Exile or has followed us for years knows that our own Jon Sevastra is a big ol’ freakin’ metal head that really does appreciate all types of music. Every year, he asks and begs and pleads for me to put SOMETHING up on the site about Rockstar Energy’s Mayhem Festival and I sort of laugh him off. This year, however, he finally broke me down. For the past few months, hard music fans like Jon have been clamoring for the day when the tickets would go on sale for the event, which features headliners KORN and ROB ZOMBIE. The festival kicks off Saturday, July 10 in San Bernardino, CA before winding through 26 cities between early July and late August. From what other event can you go home with a bloody nose and feel like you’ve had a great time?

As in years past, the third annual ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL features an electrifying mix of metal’s most influential artists and exciting young voices. This summer’s lineup sees KORN and ROB ZOMBIE joined on the main stage by LAMB OF GOD and FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH. The JAGERMEISTER stage will feature HATEBREED, CHIMAIRA, SHADOWS FALL, WINDS OF PLAGUE and the JAGERMEISTER Battle of The Bands Winner. The second stage will spotlight ATREYU, NORMA JEAN, IN THIS MOMENT and 3 INCHES OF BLOOD.

In addition to the amped excitement, the festival features METAL MULISHA, the World’s Greatest Freestyle Motocross team, and BEACHER’S MADHOUSE, a sexy costume party combined with outrageous variety acts, beautiful dancers, scantily-clad Beacher’s Babies, DJ’s and so much more. Comedian Jay Oakerson (seen on Comedy Central) will also be on hand to deliver an onslaught of unbridled awesomeness and raunchy rock n roll comedy.

This year, fans can also take Festival action to go with the brand-new 2010 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival App for the iPhone/iPod Touch. The app allows users to follow the Mayhem with news feeds, Twitter, artist info as well as artist links, video and a scheduler that you can use to create a “set list” to keep track of what times your favorite bands are playing. The app is available here.

As an added bonus, festival organizers have created a special limited-time 72-hour ticket promotion called “Get Off Your Ass,” which provides ticket buyers with a $5 discount off regular prices during the pre-sale period (April 2nd through April 5th). Fans can participate by registering at the media.musictoday link below. Once signed up, they’ll gain first access to Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tickets, as well as an opportunity to win two tickets, travel and accomodations to the July 10th kickoff show in San Bernardino. Sign up at http://media.musictoday.com/ticketing/MayhemFest/registration.html

The ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL is produced by Rockstar Taste of Chaos organizer John Reese, Vans Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman and Creative Artists Agency. The trio has made Mayhem a standout on the summer concert circuit by following the proven model of utilizing sponsorship to deliver a lower ticket price and an enhanced concert experience. This year sees them joining forces once again with ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK as the title sponsor.

Live Nation is co-producer of the tour and will promote the festival nationally.

In addition to catching their favorite bands, Mayhem-goers can enjoy a plethora of festival activities, including playing the newest video games, perusing vendors, attending autograph signing sessions and a slew of other interactive activities that enhance the concert experience.

ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK will be sampling their products and providing great surprises for attendees. Additional sponsors include Jagermeister, Harley-Davidson, Affliction, Ibanez Guitars, FUEL TV, Revolver Magazine, RoadRunner Records, Century Media, The End Records, The DiNGSTORE.com (Device Personalization Company).

FUEL-TV and Revolver Magazine (who will produce the Official Tour Program) have signed on as official ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL media partners.

Having seen Dinosaur Jr this past Winter, I have been on a serious ’90s indie/post-hardcore. The band’s influence can surely be heard on The Echo & The Light, the newest eight-song LP from Chicago’s Castevet. The LP, which will be released on 12″ vinyl and digital formats on June 29, 2010, is now up for pre-order from the label.

The band is streaming several of the new tracks on their MySpace page. Check out tour dates and more info on the release “after the jump”

[mp3] Castavet – “Midwest Values”

Upcoming Shows
May 29 2010 Howell, Michigan	12:00 P Bled Fest
Jun 12 2010 Chicago, Illinois	7:00 P Beat Kitchen w/ Native, This Town Needs Guns

Originally available as an ultra-limited six-song CDEP / tape for Castevet’s 09 Winter tour with Grown Ups, the six tracks – plus two brand new offerings – have been re-recorded and will be pressed by Tiny Engines on 180 gram black (200) and white (300) vinyl. Stiffslack Records will also be releasing a CD version of The Echo & The Light exclusive to Japan. To secure a copy of this awesome record, go here.

The band is currently streaming three songs from the LP on its Myspace page, including the never-heard-before “Six Parts Summer” and re-recorded versions of “Narrow Hallways” and “Midwest Values.”

Picking up where the Castevet’s acclaimed full-length, Summer Fences, left off, The Echo & The Light doesn’t miss a beat, honing in on the band’s most positive attributes. Leaning less on the sweeping atmospherics and lush soundscapes of its debut, the Chicago quartet kicks up the distortion and fuzz pedals that lace kinetic, intertwining guitars while placing a greater emphasis on gritty vocals and concise songs that wind tightly around propulsive, math-tinged instrumental passages. If Summer Fences was the result of a Castevet experimenting with an abundance of great ideas, The Echo & The Light is the band only using the very best of those.

Wow. One of the biggest successes coming out of 2007, Deer Tick, are back again with new material to follow up last year’s Born on Flag Day. The Black Dirt Sessions were recorded late last year at Black Dirt Studios in upstate New York. With this album, the band have created something that feels like home to me; like an isolated, backwoods cabin stocked with good bourbon and trails to hike. Upon first listen of the first track of the album, “20 Miles, The Black Dirt Sessions is set to be the most intensely personal record for lead vocalist and songwriter John McCauley to date.

Check out “20 Miles” and more info “after the jump”

It is the sound of a band coming into its own, finding its voice and pouring its collective heart out. The comparisons that have often been thrust upon McCauley by the press seem to fall away as his own voice comes through more clearly. On songs like “Goodbye, Dear Friend” and “Christ Jesus” which find McCauley alone at the piano, about as naked as you can possibly get on record. The Black Dirt version of “Christ Jesus,” which also appeared on War Elephant, manages to be even more devastating than the original.

Clearly, the band is exploring some darker material here (like death, mortality, the existence of God) than they’ve touched on in the past, and it suits them. Even as the Deer Tick live show has become legendary for its raucous, spontaneous moments, this record serves as proof of the band’s incredible musicianship, cohesive nature and most importantly gives us a chance to witness McCauley becoming a fully formed, mature songwriter right in front of our eyes (or ears).

Deer Tick had an incredible 2009. Early in the year the band had the unlikely support of NBC Nightly News’ Brian Williams, who has become one of the leading champions of Deer Tick via his BriTunes music site, alongside critics like David Fricke and Greil Marcus. The band was praised in just about every major music publication, with Rolling Stone going so far as to name them “the country-rock breakthrough of the year.” In their hometown of Providence, RI the band has gone beyond hometown hero status to hometown obesssion. Deer Tick also became a steady favorite for many of our men and women in uniform, performing for Pentagon TV several times. Last Halloween, the band played an entire set of Sex Pistols songs in costume, flawlessly without a single rehearsal. The band played at festivals like Austin City Limits, Newport Folk Festival, Joshua Tree Music Fest, Monolith, Philadelphia Folk Festival, played Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and toured with Neko Case, Jenny Lewis, Jason Isbell, The Felice Brothers. A documentary film about the band, City of Sin, was also completed last year and should see the light of day in 2010.

With their second album (Future Brite) coming out on April 20th, Demander is poised for a fantastic Spring/Summer. The lead single from the release, “Math” is simple and catchy – as of this writing, I’ve listened to it twice today and can’t stop singing it in my head. The album was recorded in NYC and produced by Jim Keller and features a mix by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Hold Steady). Guest musicians include Franz Nicolay of The Hold Steady, Native American Music Award winner Martha Redbone, and members of World/Inferno Friendship Society and Anti-Social Music.

Check out the video (and pick up the mp3) of “Math” “after the jump”

[mp3] Demander – “Math”

Demander’s Karen Kanan Corrêa and Sivan Harlap met as members of The Hissyfits in 2001. Sivan actually spent the first few months of their acquaintance trying to get Karen kicked out of the group – not everyone likes viola in a rock band – but Karen eventually switched to bass and the two became fast friends and musical allies over the next two years performing with The Killers, Gary Go, Holly Golightly and many others.

The two formed Demander in 2005 and have since recorded an EP, album and a few singles, toured with The Hold Steady, Art Brut and New Model Army and played shows with the likes of Mindless Self Indulgence, Frank Black, Kevin Devine, Nicole Atkins, Constantines, and Heartless Bastards. Press has been kind with features and reviews at RCRD LBL, CMJ New Music Monthly, The Deli Magazine, and a stint as SPIN.com’s Band of the Day. Now Demander is in yer pants, too – Levi’s just picked Future Brite as the soundtrack to the company’s latest European ad campaign.
