With the release of “Sleep Forever” (the band’s sophomore release), Crocodiles will be on the road a great deal over the next few months. They’ve just released some tourdates in support of the release (including at stop at NYC’s Mercury Lounge on Sept. 22nd), but check out some tunes “after the jump” and see what you think.

[mp3] Crocodiles – “Sleep Forever”

CROCODILES TOUR DATES
Aug 16 Los Angeles @ Echo
Aug 19 San Francisco @ Pop Scene
Aug 20 San diego @ Casbah
Aug 23 Los Angeles @ Echo
Sept 20 Chicago @ Empty Bottle
Sept 22 New York @ Mercury Lounge

Crocodiles are pleased to announce several US tour dates in support of their upcoming full-length Sleep Forever. Fat Possum will release the album, the duo’s sophomore effort, on September 14th.

Last year Brandon Welchez and Charles Rowell released Summer of Hate, their acclaimed debut album as Crocodiles. The album garnered them endless blog buzz and tours across the US and Europe supporting bands like Holy Fuck and The Horrors. The New York Times described them as “a compact blast of post-post-punk” and Rolling Stone declared, “Welcome to the art-punk renaissance.”

Significantly, Summer of Hate also caught the ear of one James Ford – Simian Mobile Disco man and producer of Arctic Monkeys, Klaxons and Florence and the Machine amongst others. Together, all three headed into the desert in early 2010 to create Summer Of Hate’s psychedelic, hypnotic and anthemic follow-up. An album that would later be christened Sleep Forever.

“More krauty, more dub” are the watch words that Brandon and Charles use to describe Sleep Forever. “James was really great,” says Brandon of its producer. “I guess there was a small fear that because he is someone who produces hit records that he’d clean us up a lot, but he did a great job of keeping it raw.”

Raw it may be, but Sleep Forever is still an unmistakably more refined beast than its predecessor. Drums and organ whirls envelope you on tracks like “Mirrors” and “Sleep Forever”, which nod to Ladies and Gentlemen… era Spiritualized as much as they do Neu! and The Velvet Underground. Meanwhile, Brandon’s tough Cali sneer gives its most emotional performance to date in “All My Hate and My Hexes Are For You”.

Back with a full five-piece live band – including drummer Alianna Kalaba, bassist Marco Gonzalez and keyboardist Robin Eisenberg – and a summer of open roads ahead of them, it seems unlikely that Crocodiles will ever have to do anything more mundane than soundcheck again.”

Remember when we first brought Parades into your lives a few months back? (Damn, that video for “Loserspeak in New Tongue” was awesome!) Now, the band are readying their debut, which will be coming out on Dot Dash, and we’ve got a preview at one of the great new tracks.

Check out a sample of what the band’s been up to “after the jump”

Parades are a young art-rock band from Sydney, signed to the independent label, Dot Dash and have wisely chosen to produce their debut album in band member Jonathan Boulet’s garage. Jonathan has had considerable success in his own right as a solo artist signed to the Modular label.

The results are ambitious and undeniably refreshing. The new material chases the expansive and grandiose leanings hinted at on their early radio-favorite “Dead Nationale”. The young band effortlessly achieves a dynamic whitewash of pop harmonies, post- rock guitars and electronic meanderings. Somewhere amidst the blog hype it has been described as “the results of unhinged jam session”.

Parades recently toured with Seabellies, headlined a national album launch tour of Australia and will shortly tour with Sally Seltmann and Passion Pit:

Upcoming Dates
July 23, 2010 Oxford Art Factory
July 24, 2010 The Heritage Hotel
Aug 2, 2010 The Forum

After quick examination, one might think we’re falling in love with Pitchfork TV. Truth-be-told, we’ve never been offered a video premiere and since these guys have them all, we tend to post those. Ha. About this clip:

“Fang Island began, oddly enough, as an art school project while the band members were attending the prodigious Rhode Island School of Design (also the foundation for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Les Savvy Fav, Six Finger Satellite, Lightning Bolt and some band called the Talking Heads.)

Today, Pitchfork premieres the quintet’s latest video, “Careful Crossers” which was shot in Los Angeles in the storied Glassroom at Sargent House. This marks the band’s third video to debut via the popular site which previously featured the quirky videos for “Daisy” and “Life Coach“.

“Careful Crossers” is the third single off their self-titled debut (out now via Sargent House)

Fang Island is clearly not an immobile landmass. This weekend, the Brooklyn based high-fiving guitar-anthem optimists kick off dates supporting indie-rock legends the Flaming Lips. In August, Fang Island support the reunited Stone Temple Pilots. Soon thereafter, the band embarks on their first headlining tour of the UK and Europe in September, starting in Dublin at the Electric Picnic. As if that weren’t enough, Fang Island has also added the Pygmalian Music Festival and Midpoint Music Festival, as well as a Williamsburg Waterfront performance to its busy itinerary. Please see below for complete dates.

Today, Pitchfork premieres the quintet’s latest video, “Careful Crossers” which was shot in Los Angeles in the storied Glassroom at Sargent House. This marks the band’s third video to debut via the popular site which previously featured the quirky videos for “Daisy” and “Life Coach”.

Fang Island’s self-titled debut album hit shelves on February 23rd via Sargent House amid a wealth of praise from press, with many writers declaring it one of the Best of 2010, just two months into the new year. A digital EP featuring the popular album track “Daisy” backed with Chris Keating of Yeasayer’s remix of “Absolute Place” off their Sky Gardens EP preceded the full length in January.

Fang Island’s finger-tapping guitar lines, chanted vocals, triumphant harmonies and overall perky songs hearken to the sort of “Total Music” of Jay Reatard, Ponytail, Kraftwerk, Marnie Stern, Thin Lizzy, et al. But, perhaps more so, its songs are like the music in your head at that moment when everything feels just right: that first kiss, that high score on the video game, buying your first small nation in cash… you know, good stuff. Check out MP3s for two tracks, “Daisy” (MP3 HERE) and “Life Coach” (MP3 HERE).

Fang Island began, oddly enough, as an art school project while the band members were attending the prodigious Rhode Island School of Design (also the foundation for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Les Savvy Fav, Six Finger Satellite, Lightning Bolt and some band called the Talking Heads.) According to guitarist Jason Bartell, the goal was to “make music for people who like music.” That is, music without irony that harnesses its uplifting qualities. Just like a classic rock song or classical symphony can stir us emotionally, Fang Island exists to unlock that spirit.

Fang Island is guitarist Jason Bartell, bassist Michael Jacober, guitarist Chris Georges, guitarist Nicholas Andrew Sadler, and drummer Marc St. Sauveur. They all share collective group vocal harmonies and the occasional hand claps. While Sadler is also known for his role in the debauched rock band Daughters, it is only his fretboard skill that translates between the two groups.

King of The Beach, originally slated for an Aug. 3 release date, will now be available via iTunes exclusively on July 1, all other digital outlets on July 13 and the physical street date (CD / LP) remains Aug. 3.

Bio:

In the life of Nathan Williams, the year of 2009 will go down as both a highlight reel and a total shit show. Meteorically, feverishly and somewhat improbably, two albums worth of naïve punk rock he recorded behind his parents’ San Diego home as Wavves became a sensation in the world of indie music. As a result, passports got filled, capers got pulled off and lots of good things got said about the music in both print and digital ink, plus in actual human voices. At the same time, fights got fought, situations got hairy and people got indignant and mean.

Oh well. Fuck it. All of it.

What’s important now is that, in the beginning of 2010, Williams made King of the Beach, the new Wavves album. King of the Beach is an adventurous and ambitious record. It cuts deeper into the bleeding throat catharsis and ’60s sunshine soul that Wavves is known for. It also unexpectedly flips out with elements of primitive electronics and psychedelic studio experimentation.

“There was a conscious effort going into this that I didn’t want to make the same record again. I already made the same record twice, with the same fucking cover art,” says Williams. “It wasn’t overbearing, but I didn’t want to recreate something I’d done. I wanted to make something bigger, something stronger.”

Unlike Wavves’ previously released material, recorded in haphazard bursts on Williams’ laptop, King of the Beach was toiled over for three months at Sweet Tea Recording, a world-renown studio in Oxford, Mississippi. Sweet Tea is also the home of Dennis Herring, producer of the last two Modest Mouse albums, and the man who dismantled and re-assembled the sound on this record.

All the rumors are true: Herring is a studio perfectionist. Williams is not. “There were some definite ‘I want to wring you neck’-type moments,” Williams says of the sessions, but he also understood that, with the resources he had available to him, he’d be stupid not to make the album sound exactly how he wanted it. “When you’re not watering it down with a load of shit and reverb, it’s a lot harder to make a record, because you know every part is going to be heard perfectly. You can’t half-ass anything,” says Williams. “A lot more effort went into this than with previous Wavves records.”

Another marked difference in the making of King of the Beach was that Williams wrote and recorded two songs with bassist Stephen Pope and drummer Billy Hayes, the duo who became his touring band at the end of 2009. Pope and Hayes formerly backed recently departed garage rock force of nature Jay Reatard. Williams met the two after his infamously disastrous performance at the Primavera Sound Festival in Spain. “I think we all agree that they squeegeed me up, because I melted down,” says Williams.

Though there is a confidence in the scope of the album-from the title track’s denim on sand anthem-baiting to the tweaked pop of “Convertable Balloon” to the unabashed prettiness of “When Will You Come”-Williams’ usual lyrical themes of self-loathing are still impossible to ignore. “I think everybody feels that way sometimes. I know everybody feels that way sometimes. You’re a fucking liar if you don’t,” says Williams. “It wouldn’t make sense if I’m feeling a certain way to not write about it. There are songs about hating myself, but there are also songs about driving in a car with a balloon and playing Nintendo too.”

In the end, though, King of the Beach is not an album for the miserable. While the verses of “Take on the World” enumerate the things Williams hates (his writing, his music, his self) the chorus resolves into a simple, bold repeated phrase: “To take on the world would be something.”

The album title King of the Beach isn’t meant to be ironic or a self-deprecating joke. It’s a declaration. “Without sounding cheesy, we all wanted to make something inspiring,” says Williams. “It’s the type of thing where you have this much, but you could have more, so go get it.”

Radio Exile were lucky enough to be present to see Darwin Deez back home for their first show since NME’s Radar Tour. They’ve been described as “near-genius” pop and that’s what we heard and saw on Monday night; something worth taking lots of rad photos of. I am glad I was wearing shorts because my pants WERE charmed off.

We’ve been swamped at RE the past week or so (if you couldn’t tell) but I want to let you know that we’re still working our butts off. Just want to finish some stuff to make this place more fun for you guys as well. In the mean time, here’s Woods’ new video. Well, actually, here’s a bit about their new album, At Echo Lake:

“With a title like At Echo Lake, the fifth album from New York’s Woods intimates a modern rock aesthetic fully informed by historical manifestations of teenage along with a concomitant feel for the specifics of time and place. The distance between 2007′s At Rear House and 2010′s At Echo Lake may at first seem only semantic but it more properly represents a move from a kind of informal back porch jam ethos to a fully-committed vision of the infinite possibilities of group playing.”

See, now you want to check it out, right? I know that I do.

[mp3] Woods – “I Was Gone”

Upcoming Shows

% = w/ Real Estate

Over the past few years Woods have established themselves as an anomaly in a world of freaks. They were an odd proposition even in the outré company of vocalist/guitarist/label owner Jeremy Earl’s Woodsist roster, perpetually out of time, committed to songsmanship in an age of noise, drone and improvisation, to extended soloing, oblique instrumentals and the usurping use of tapes and F/X in an age of dead-end singer-songwriters. Recent live shows have seen them best confuse the two, playing beautifully-constructed songs torn apart by fuzztone jams and odd electronics.

At Echo Lake feels like a diamond-sharp distillation of the turbulent power of their live shows, in much the same way that The Grateful Dead’s “Dark Star” single amplified and engulfed the planetary aspect of their improvised takes. Some of the material here – the opening “Blood Dries Darker”, the euphoric “Mornin’ Time” – is so lush that lesser brains would’ve succumbed to the appeal of strings and horns but At Echo Lake is more Fifth Dimension than Notorious Byrd Brothers, nowhere more so than on “From The Horn”, a track that is as beautiful in its assault on form as “Eight Miles High” or Swell Maps’ “Midget Submarines”. But despite the instrumental innovation that the album heralds – G. Lucas Cranes’ psychedelic tapework on “Suffering Season”, guest musician Matthew Valentine’s harmonica and modified banjo/sitar on “Time Fading Lines” – At Echo Lake is all about the vocals.

Woods’ secret weapon is the quality of Earl’s voice, osmosing the naive style of Jad Fair, Jonathan Richman and Neil Young while re-thinking it as a discipline and a tradition. Here he is singing at the peak of his powers, in a high soulful style that is bolstered by heavenly arrangements of backing vocals. At Echo Lake feels like the transmission point for teenage garage from the past to the future. Deformed by contemporary experiments, bolstered by magical traditions from the past, it’s the sound of now, right here, At Echo Lake.

The Static Jacks may write about escaping their home state. But while you can take the band out of New Jersey, you can’t take the New Jersey out of the band. And boy, do they have that Garden State attitude with songs like ‘Parties and Friends (And Bullshit)’ and ‘My Parents Lied’. Their music is best described as the raw energy of a garage band… but with soul. Sure you can compare them to Morrissey or the Strokes… but only because they’re that good. Their anthem of ‘Woah Woah Woah’ was a perfect start to the nights festivities.

On the surface, The Like – with their mod-type clothing straight out of an Austin Powers flick or any given episode of Laugh In – could be taken for a sexy eye catching gimmick. But don’t let their looks fool you as it perfectly compliments their brand of 60′s girl group meets alt-pop. The Ronettes meet The Bangles. While Lead singer Elizabeth ‘Z’ Berg sings about a cheating boyfriend who is going to regret being untrue in a big way, a sultry Annie Monroe plays the organ and provides groovy background harmonies while Laena Geronimo’s bass is up front and personal. And let’s not forget Tennessee Thomas, who’s not only a kickass drummer, but is also appearing in Scott Pilgrim vs the World (due in theaters August 13th). Seriously, it’s the first time I’ve ever had a crush on an entire band.

Look out for The Like’s second album (which was produced by Mark Ronson) upon it’s release June 15th.

Headlining were The Futureheads. Sounding like a post-hardcore Fugazi meets the Killers meets English Beat, the band brought the house down with many a track from their new album, ‘The Chaos’. But the absolute highlight was when, Futureheads lead singer Barry Hyde was replaced by a member of the audience (for one song). Barry, having previously announced to the crowd that he was having issues with his singing voice (issues that almost cancelled the show!) and asked a member of the audience to sing lead vocals for their next song and picked audience member Tiernan Browne out of the crowd and on to the stage to sing their biggest hit, ‘Hounds of Love’! And he turned out to be excellent behind the mic. After the show, as “Barry” Tiernan posed for pics, Barry called their new lead singer “My Hero.”

Illinois-makers (ha!) Elsinore have put together an immaculate track here with the tune “Yes Yes Yes” (which you can grab in a minute, bear with us). With the announcement that the Yes Yes Yes full length will be dropping August 10th, we’re salivating. Or, we’re at least very happy. The band are a blast of fresh air, not a breath; knocking the wind from our lungs with fun, energetic melodies and tunes of “the simplistic bliss of life in the Midwest”.

More info and tour dates “after the jump”

[mp3] Elsinore – “Yes Yes Yes”

Summer Tour Dates (more to come):

06.12 Taste of Champaign-Urbana (Champaign, IL)
06.12 Independent Music and Arts Festival (Indianapolis, IN)
06.24 Summerfest (Milwaukee, WI)
07.13 Mike N’ Molly’s (Champaign, IL)
08.13 Firebird (St Louis, MO)
08.14 Canopy Club (Champaign, IL)
08.20 Black Sparrow (Lafayette, IN)
08.21 Radio Radio (Indianapolis, IN)
08.26 Blind Pig (Ann Arbor, MI)
08.27 The Strutt (Kalamazoo, MI)
08.28 Mulligan’s (Grand Rapids, MI)
09.02 Lemon Grove (Youngstown, OH)
09.03 Howler’s Cafe (Pittsburgh, PA)
09.04 Labyrinth Press Co. – early show (Jamestown, NY)
09.04 Mojo’s – late show (Jamestown, NY)
09.05 Bug Jar (Rochester, NY)

Recorded over two years and a thousand studio hours, Yes Yes Yes is a textured and dynamic song-scape. The album flows organically through epic, passionate rockers (Landlocked, Gasoline), hushed and intimate confessions (Body of Water, Breathing Light), and playful accounts of legendary locals (Chemicals). Groff’s unmistakable voice elicits moods of vulnerability and positivity, and pulls from the entire spectrum of love itself.

The album was co-produced with Adam Schmitt (HUM, Headlights) and Anthony Gravino, and was mastered by Jon Pines (Billy Bragg & Wilco, Jay Bennett, Braid) in Champaign-Urbana, IL.

Yes Yes Yes is much more than a statement of positivity. It’s an enthusiastic realization; an honest and autobiographical display of humanism. These are stories of self-examination, sacrifice, compromise, and lessons learned, all leading to the avoidance of a quarter-life crisis.

One of my all-time favorite bands, Murder by Death, just released a new video for their song “White Noise”. The video for was created by the Australian animator/design team of MaricorMaricar (Architecture in Helsinki, The Living End) and is “based on a treatment by the band’s cellist, Sarah Balliet, and explores the “ominous undercurrent” of the song”.

I can’t express more eloquently how much I love the new album, Good Morning, Magpie, so I will let the clip and mp3s speak for themselves.

Check out the video, treats and more “after the jump”

The Bloomington, Indiana quartet recently made their debut appearance on the Billboard Top 200 Chart with the release of their fifth full-length, Good Morning, Magpie (4/6/10, Vagrant) and also debuted at #5 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. The San Francisco Chronicle said Good Morning, Magpie, “sports a textural Americana tone, with strings and horns punctuating Turla’s stories. It’s probably the band’s most accessible album to date,’ while The New Yorker said, “…the result is the four-piece’s most accomplished work to date. The eleven new songs find Turla’s deep and arid bass-baritone pitted against a tumbledown bricolage of dark vaudeville hysterics and Southern gothicism.”
