I’m at the doctor getting the horn in this photo examined (I’ve had it over a week after a nasty collision with a goal post BEFORE a soccer game).

What feels like years ago, our own Dan Berkman wanted Radio Exile (then known as Broken Dial) to reach out to the fine folks behind Juan’s Basement and hook up with them regarding promoting their show on the web. It was a good idea, so it goes without saying that every time I see their latest episodes or a clip from the series over at Pitchfork.TV, there’s a tinge of sadness for what could have been. The Harlem Shakes have broken up. If you live outside of New York City this news likely means nothing to you and if you do live here, you’re likely thinking either “meh”, “who?”, or maybe even “that’s too bad”. Put me into the “that’s too bad” category. Actually, put me into the “this really blows” category. For whatever reason, the Harlem Shakes were as a cruelly overlooked, ignored, and under appreciated band as their has been in New York this decade. They were never flashy, never seriously buzzed about, never given much attention period. They always sort of seemed to be there floating in a sea of similar bands that could easily grouped in a future late night TV compilation entitled “Post-Strokes NYC Indie Bands”. But now that they are gone, I want to commit to public record the voice of at least one person who says that dammit, the Harlem Shakes were a damn good band and as an enjoyable producer of music as I’ve heard. …read full article…

Okay, so let me start with this: I have no problem with you as a reviewer. You gave “In The Aeroplane Over The Sea” a 10.0 (…eventually), so really, we should be like best friends here.

Anamanaguchi [Official Site, MySpace] is perhaps the rarest thing today in indie music: they are original. And not the “we are experimental because we make horribly grating noises that nobody else has ever heard before” kind of original. No, Anamanaguchi are the kick ass sort of original. 8-bit arena rock power pop original. Combine Weezer with an old Nintendo and some Red Bull sort of kick ass.

The band was awesome enough to sit down with Radio Exile at Vassar College a short while back. What transpired was entertaining to say the least. Among other things, we talk about aliens who come to their shows, the Hudson Valley, and how Bear Hands are a bunch of assholes for backing into their car 15 minutes earlier.

Welcome to a new monthly(ish) feature, Radio Exile’s Next Big Three. A step up from our Hype Device column, here is where we call out who is to be the next big thing (well that was rather self explanatory, wasn’t it?)

Who?
Philadelphia-based Kurt Vile [MySpace] makes skuzzy lo-fi guitar rock which sounds like it inhabits the space between a lonely desert road at night and the endless cosmos above.

Why Him?
Because indie rock still hasn’t found its Jim Morrison. Matador Records, which just signed Vile, tends to have pretty good taste in these sorts of matters. Because Vile is his real last name (reportedly). Because “The Hunchback” is a great song. Because he totally killed it at the Woodsist Festival earlier this month. Because he’s one of the hardest working men in rock today.

What We Predict?
An introspective version of Ted Leo’s career. This guy is a lifer with a growing and dedicated fan base. Will never have a “hit” but will become indie rock royalty after a couple of albums.
