Taking a Break Today

image1997672146.jpgHey Radio Exile friends -

I’m taking a bit of a break today to spend time at Universal Studios. The photo above is of the wife and I from yesterday’s Miami Dolphins game. It was nice not to have to deal with NYC snow and cold, for sure.

We have our year end list posted in the coming days (once all our votes are in and tabulated) and this year, we want your opinions as well. Feel free to email me at radioexile@gmail.com and tell me your favorite albums and shows of the year.

Happy Holidays,

Update Later

image214165817.jpgI’m at the doctor getting the horn in this photo examined (I’ve had it over a week after a nasty collision with a goal post BEFORE a soccer game).

I should have had this checked out a week ago. Ugh.

Update: (2:30 pm ET) I ruptured a scalp vein. Can’t get it drained because it clotted after it (evidently re-ruptured). I’m hardcore.

Update: (2:33 pm ET) I just realized that if I can keep this up for 30 more days, I could grow a horn for Halloween and have the best costume ever. Rock!

[Juan's Basement] Passion Pit – “Sleepyhead”

juansbasement

What feels like years ago, our own Dan Berkman wanted Radio Exile (then known as Broken Dial) to reach out to the fine folks behind Juan’s Basement and hook up with them regarding promoting their show on the web. It was a good idea, so it goes without saying that every time I see their latest episodes or a clip from the series over at Pitchfork.TV, there’s a tinge of sadness for what could have been. That’s what happens when you drag your feet (note: that’s me making fun of me, for sure).

Either way, check out Passion Pit playing “Sleepyhead” from Juan’s Basement “after the jump” …read full article…

Harlem Shakes Break Up =(

harlem-shakes-album

The Harlem Shakes have broken up. If you live outside of New York City this news likely means nothing to you and if you do live here, you’re likely thinking either “meh”, “who?”, or maybe even “that’s too bad”. Put me into the “that’s too bad” category. Actually, put me into the “this really blows” category. For whatever reason, the Harlem Shakes were as a cruelly overlooked, ignored, and under appreciated band as their has been in New York this decade. They were never flashy, never seriously buzzed about, never given much attention period. They always sort of seemed to be there floating in a sea of similar bands that could easily grouped in a future late night TV compilation entitled “Post-Strokes NYC Indie Bands”. But now that they are gone, I want to commit to public record the voice of at least one person who says that dammit, the Harlem Shakes were a damn good band and as an enjoyable producer of music as I’ve heard. …read full article…

An Open Letter To Pitchfork RE: Love Will Tear Us Apart Covers

P4K

Dear Mark Richardson,

Okay, so let me start with this: I have no problem with you as a reviewer. You gave “In The Aeroplane Over The Sea” a 10.0 (…eventually), so really, we should be like best friends here.

But I must say, giving Broken Social Scene’s Love Will Tear Us Apart cover a 3 is puzzling at best. This is a song that has been covered a ton of times and the BSS version is one of the best. Hands down. For sure. Fo shizzle. Yes yes indeed.

Anamanaguchi Interview: Green men, Weezer, and how Bear Hands are assholes

l_1bce75fd5afcb4ff58fc3780255a1083.jpg

Anamanaguchi [Official Site, MySpace] is perhaps the rarest thing today in indie music: they are original. And not the “we are experimental because we make horribly grating noises that nobody else has ever heard before” kind of original. No, Anamanaguchi are the kick ass sort of original. 8-bit arena rock power pop original. Combine Weezer with an old Nintendo and some Red Bull sort of kick ass.

The band was awesome enough to sit down with Radio Exile at Vassar College a short while back. What transpired was entertaining to say the least. Among other things, we talk about aliens who come to their shows, the Hudson Valley, and how Bear Hands are a bunch of assholes for backing into their car 15 minutes earlier.

Read on. …read full article…

Radio Exile’s Next Big Three

“The Best New Music Before It’s The Best New Music”

Welcome to a new monthly(ish) feature, Radio Exile’s Next Big Three. A step up from our Hype Device column, here is where we call out who is to be the next big thing (well that was rather self explanatory, wasn’t it?)

l_c8b0f3fe5fe4ccfd973306f25166911a.jpg

Who?
Philadelphia-based Kurt Vile [MySpace] makes skuzzy lo-fi guitar rock which sounds like it inhabits the space between a lonely desert road at night and the endless cosmos above.

Why Him?
Because indie rock still hasn’t found its Jim Morrison. Matador Records, which just signed Vile, tends to have pretty good taste in these sorts of matters. Because Vile is his real last name (reportedly). Because “The Hunchback” is a great song. Because he totally killed it at the Woodsist Festival earlier this month. Because he’s one of the hardest working men in rock today.

What We Predict?
An introspective version of Ted Leo’s career. This guy is a lifer with a growing and dedicated fan base. Will never have a “hit” but will become indie rock royalty after a couple of albums.

Video Hook-Up: “Folsom Prison Blues” Performed by Wesley (5 years old)

Props for this find go to Lindsay at BuzzFeed (her quote: “5-year old Wesley takes on Johnny Cash’s ode to sex, drugs, and murder.”). Once I saw this clip, I knew that I had to share it with our readers as well. This kid is too cute; ridiculously cute.

From the info: ‘”Folsom Prison Blues” performed by Wesley, 5 years old, at the 2009 Spring Coffee Shop Jam, at The Columbia City Theater in Seattle, WA. The Jam’s a chance for Heartwood Guitar Instruction students to showcase their talents. Enjoy!’

Daily Dose – Monday Linkage

First up is an amazing mashup pitting Rick Astley with Nirvana. Seriously, I saw this a few hours ago and I have remained BEYOND impressed all day long. Rad mashup by DJ Morgoth and video mash by Thrift Shop XL [YouTube]

The Emmy-nominated, The Polyphonic Spree just posted the first demo for their upcoming record and it’s just Tim and a guitar, but I can’t wait to hear what they’re headed [GvB]

James and I both agree that “The Fixer” is not the direction we were hoping that Pearl Jam was going in. It doesn’t “suck” for fans, but it won’t win anyone else over, that’s for sure [Prefix]

Frank put together a really nice review of Now, Now Every Children’s Cars. He always seems so very nice, I should make a point to meet him one day [Chromewaves]

Culture Bully reviews Fanfarlo’s Reservoir and I guess I should finally check it out [Culture Bully]
